New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill bashed the “inherited” World Cup host agreement in which FIFA is absolved of paying for transportation to the matches at MetLife Stadium — and insisted she won’t stand for its planned price gouging.
NJ Transit plans to raise prices to a staggering $100 for fans traveling from New York Penn Station to MetLife Stadium for the eight FIFA World Cup games hosted at the Garden State arena.
The average ticket goes for $12.90, marking an egregious 775% premium for all.
While the rumored hike has “not been finalized,” according to a NJT spokesperson, locals are already fuming — Sherrill included.
Sherrill, who entered office at the beginning of this year, fumed that her “administration inherited an agreement where FIFA is providing zero dollars for transportation” to and from the World Cup.
She surmised that the hullabaloo will bury NJT under “a $48 million bill” as they are tasked with carting upwards of 40,000 fans to and from the stadium.
At the same time, the haughty honchos at FIFA are set to make an estimated $11 billion off the Cup, so covering the transportation bill would only eat up an estimated .4% of their entire revenue.
“I won’t stick New Jersey commuters with that tab for years to come. That’s not fair. So here’s the bottom line, FIFA should pay for the rides, but if they don’t, I’m not gonna let New Jersey commuters get taken for one,” Sherrill said.
New York Sen. Chuck Schumer also criticized FIFA for “[handing] the bill” to the public.
“The least FIFA can do is ensure New York residents can go to the stadium without being gouged at the turnstile. I am demanding FIFA step up and cover transportation costs for host cities and states.

Let them take their grift back home. They can broadcast the games from there.
The state likely fought to have these games in NJ for the economic development and tourist dollars. Now they want to renege on their agreement to host.
There’s always a grift coming on from some person or organization who seizes on an opportunity like this. It is not right, but they are apparently unconcerned about that. What can I say but....”the day’s coming”.
When Taylor Swift played two shows at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA the train tickets from Boston to the stadium sold out for the show dates. As did all the parking passes.
So, not only were the actual concert tickets being scalped, so were the train and parking.
I heard that the one of the European(I think France) bought out the Ritz Carlton Hotel for their soccer team. The ENTIRE hotel for the World Cup. Which is in downtown Boston right by Boston Common. Foxboro(Gillette Stadium) is an hour drive away to the SW.

Why does anyone need to pay for the fans? Once the train reaches capacity which helps the transit systems, fans will uber, taxi, limo, bus, charter, to the stadium.
This whining is preparing the fans for a money grab.
Well that’s the point. Taylor Swift was not asked to subsidize the MTA. The NJ Transit makes money when ridership increases. They should add trains and increase capacity instead of scalping tickets. Imagine what the scalpers will charge for the train rides.

Well, instead of whining and crying and complaining and “fuming,” turn to creating a solution — a solution that doesn’t involve me, by the way. What a novel concept.
As of April 2026, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has proposed a FY 2027 budget that includes over $1 billion in direct state operating support for NJ Transit, representing a 26% increase over the previous year to improve reliability and capital projects. The plan includes $782 million for capital projects and focuses on upgrading aging infrastructure, including new rail cars and buses.
Its a forever financially failed system with ridership and fares that cannot keep the system operating. Pouring billions more from the taxpayers into a failed system will only INSURE the taxpayers will have to keep doing so forever. A subsidized system has no market oriented incentives to correct it’s fiscal situation so that its operations and its fares are a financial match.
A really good NJ governor would pack the NJ transit board and demand its components be sold off to private investors. There are parts of NJ transit - certain lines - that could be profitable but that is not true for most of the system. Cut to only the most financially feasible lines, without needing to prop up the rest of the system, a private NJ transit could do as well as many airlines.
The biggest game, the final is going to be held there. The world wide tv audience will no doubt be huge. That is somewhat like the Super Bowl and it’s still whine whine whine. The gouge for that game will be extra special.
Parking prices for any events are ridiculous now. Prices in Memphis average $40-$50, even for minor league baseball games.
The more accurate term would be that "they lose less". The farebox recovery ratio for NJT is 40-50%. (From Post 18 by mjustice)
In this case, having to pay overtime and add extra trains will likely cost them far more than the gain, and it's for customers who aren't their regulars. Those regular customers and New Jersey taxpayers will face rate increases to cover the losses.
In addition, for most industries, there's a point where increasing production will cost more than the gain in receipts.
Store foot traffic is a good example. Keeping a store open one hour longer serves more customers but requiring overtime for staff or hiring additional employees to cover that hour could cost far more than the receipts, much less the profit.
NJ Transit trains run the length of NJ and into and out of Penn Station in Manhattan. And just like the rest of the Northeast corridor AMTRAK (and other) lines, it has enough population density and potential ridership to be profitable - if it was on its own.
The same is true for AMTRAK and the other lines on the Northeast corridor - Boston to D.C.. They would be profitable lines on their own, but instead their revenue has to try to support all the other non-profitable lines the politicians - state and federal - demand be kept active.
NJ Transit has bus and train lines that should be scrapped. As a government/political entity the “elected officials” will not allow it. As a private company it could make fiscally responsible decisions - which would cut out any line - bus or train - that cannot support itself from the fares.
