The Iranian regime executed more than 1,600 people last year — marking a three decade high not seen since the end of the Islamic Republic’s war against Iraq in 1989.
The shocking figures were included in a joint report released by the nonprofit Iran Human Rights and Together Against the Death Penalty, which estimated that in 2025 at least four people were put to death each day in Iran.
In total, at least 1,639 were executed in Iran last year, the highest reported number since the post-war bloodbath in 1989, where an estimated 1,700 political prisoners were executed, according to the report.
It’s not clear how many of the executions were done publicly.
Most of last year’s prisoners were hanged for drug-related offenses or murder at ostensibly higher rates compared to 2024. Drug-related convictions resulting in death saw a 58% increase, while murder convictions — which almost always leads to execution — jumped a staggering 79%, according to the report.
At least 57 others, including two protesters, were given the death penalty for intangible charges like “waging war against God” and “corruption on Earth,” according to the report.
At least 48 women were also killed, setting another 20-year record, according to the report.
A bulk of the death sentences were handed down by the Revolutionary Courts “after grossly unfair trials and without due process,” the report said.

Democrats are envious of the Iranian regime.
We have the opposite problem. The criminals are all being released to go out and rape and kill because of our criminal friendly justice system.

What number would you like us to hit? Double or triple that? We have over 3 times the population in general.
They are running an execution rate (rough, back of napkin based calculation here based on 90MM population) of an execution rate of about 0.00001778%.
Don’t you think that’s really low?
I’m not sure what percentage of their population is worthy of execution in comparison to ours. I guess that depends on the way you look at it.
I know that Iran is not the US and is not our problem. We can’t fix everyone else’s country because we can’t seem to fix our own.
“Goin’ out with a bang.”
We only killed 47 last year.
Used lethal injection.
Quieter.
Made a lot of lawyers very rich!
In America, it would be cheaper to
build single cell prisons and lock
the animal up for life, pay staff well,
and give convicts little outside contact,
rather than make lawyers rich trying to
keep them alive from a death sentence.
They will have a life of
solitude, physically comfortable,
but alone.
They have to be alone, they
can’t hurt anybody ever again!
Isn’t that the purpose of the
death sentence? No Parole.
Vengeance belongs to God,
we have a right to protect
ourselves.
How can you argue against that?
We save money and get rid of
obnoxious lawyers.
Religion of peace is at it again.
Actually the number was probably much higher, as these were only the ones formally charged with a crime and tried before a magistrate of some kind, and the numbers summarily executed on the street without any suggestion of being treated as criminal elements with any right to trial of any sort at all, vastly exceed this relatively modest number.
In the last days of the Third Reich, roving patrols of the SS would accost German civilians on the street for violations of curfew, and at the least sign of protest, would shoot the transgressor on the spot and hang the corpse from the nearest lamp post.
Political opponents are being attacked.
