Please Find a Film (that A.I. Can't Locate): In World War II, two soldiers form a strong bond, one, an orphan, who never had a home and has no one who cares for him or any place to go once the war is over; the other who has a strong home and community life but who dies before returning home causing a strong loss-reaction among his family. The orphan shows up at the deceased soldier's home and is welcomed to a home for the first time in his life.
Washouts: Not "The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)". Not "The Search (1948)". Not "The Bold and the Brave (1956)".

‘Two Soldiers’?
The synopsis makes me think of Dondi, but I doubt that’s it.
Midway, Battle of the a Buldge, Bridge over River Qui
🎬 Till the End of Time
Follows soldiers returning from WWII
One comes from a strong family, another is more rootless and adrift
Deals with loss, reintegration, and finding a place in civilian life
Has that “found family” element you’re remembering
Another strong possibility:
🎬 The Human Comedy
Centers on a tight-knit American family during WWII
A son dies in the war
A fellow soldier connected to him visits the family
The emotional core is very close to what you described:
grief + someone without a home being welcomed in
Identity Unkown?
Are you sure it was WWII? The plot sounds a lot like a couple of TV westerns about the civil war.
And the survey says...?
I remember that one. It might of been named after a town in Southern Cal. or the valley. Ya got me wondering.
The Search Montgomery Clift ?
Almost Key Largo, but without Eddie G and the gangsters.
Grok guesses:
The Guest (2014), directed by Adam Wingard and starring Dan Stevens.
Ha. It doesn’t sound anything like Key Largo.
I asked Grok to think harder:
“The film you’re describing is The Human Comedy (1943), a classic MGM wartime drama directed by Clarence Brown and based on William Saroyan’s novel/short story of the same name.”
Good Job Amigo !
.
I knew You were Top Tier!
And, as is so often the case, there’s a Simpsons episode with the very same plotline.
“WW2 Film about Soldiers” doesn’t eliminate many, even with wonky capitalization.
Not your film, but try this one “84 Charlie MoPic
full movie.
Indeed. There's a good reason I was named "Blennos." But we should give Grok some of the credit.
Always happy to hear from the inimitable Big Red Badger.
