The Pentagon has added Operation Epic Fury to its casualty database, as of April 3 showing 365 U.S. troops wounded in action and 13 killed.

The update follows weeks of rising casualty reports tied to the operation. On Friday and into Saturday, a search remained ongoing for one of two F-15E crew members taken down in Iran. U.S. officials said March 1 that three service members had been killed and five seriously wounded. By March 2, the number of those killed had risen to six.

Military.com sought clarification on how the Pentagon defines those killed in action, died of wounds, or non-hostile deaths. A Defense Department duty officer directed questions to U.S. Central Command.

Army Accounts for Largest Share of Wounded

The newly released data shows the U.S. Army accounts for the largest share of troops wounded in action in Operation Epic Fury, with 247 of the 365 total casualties.

The Navy accounts for 63 wounded, followed by the Air Force with 36 and the Marine Corps with 19.

A U.S. Army carry team transfers the remains of Army Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington of Glendale, Ky., March 9, 2026, at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware. Pennington was assigned to 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade, Fort Carson, Colo. (U.S. Air Force photo/Jason Minto)

The figures provide one of the first service-by-service breakdowns of casualties tied to the operation, showing how losses are distributed across the force as the conflict continues.

The total death toll remains at 13, according to the Defense Department database, underscoring a wide gap between fatal and nonfatal casualties.

How the Pentagon Counts War Deaths Is Under Scrutiny

The casualty data is maintained through the Defense Casualty Analysis System, the Pentagon’s official system for tracking U.S. military deaths and injuries.

Military.com reached out to the Defense Manpower Data Center, which manages the system, along with...

It was Sharon who withdrew from Gaza as part of the peace accords. Fatah was supposed to win the election afterwards providing a unified Palestinian government.

Instead, Hamas murdered several Fatah members and the rest fled, leaving Hamas in charge of Gaza.

With whom was Netanyahu (or any Israeli government) supposed to deal with in Gaza?

BTW, Netanyahu resigned from the government and opposed Sharon's withdrawal.

“If we don’t achieve regime change then was any of this worth it?”

They will never run out of terrorists to run their country. If you have a child that is hitting people with a stick, don’t you just take the stick away? If you have a country that is threatening the world with nuclear attacks using ballistic missiles then take their ability to use them away. The next step is find a way to make them not want to use them. We haven’t figured that out yet.

Thanks to people like Obama and Biden giving them the funds to accomplish it, they have put back a possible leash going on them for generations. But the trip starts with the first step. We can only hope our future politicians don’t fall down again.

Israel is an armed combat zone, but the military didn’t notice an invasion for hours.

The IDF's failure on October 7 was a genuine, humiliating disaster. Intelligence had Hamas's detailed plan ("Jericho Wall") for over a year and treated it as aspirational fantasy. Early morning warnings were ignored or downplayed. The multi-axis assault — thousands of terrorists, rockets, paragliders, powered hang-gliders, bulldozers breaching the fence — hit on a holiday with skeleton crews. In many places, it took hours for effective response because the Gaza Division was basically overrun early, command posts hit, sensors blinded, and chaos reigned. Israel has released multiple internal probes admitting this.

That said, the "armed combat zone where the military didn't notice for hours" line is half-true at best and often deployed to dunk rather than understand: That said, the "armed combat zone where the military didn't notice for hours" line is half-true at best and often deployed to dunk rather than understand:What actually happenedHamas achieved surprise against one of the most surveilled borders on Earth. Even prepared forces get surprised (see: 1973 Yom Kippur War, Pearl Harbor). Complacency after years of "mowing the grass" ops + heavy reliance on tech/fences/Iron Dome contributed. The ground response was slow and disorganized in the first hours because Hamas specifically targeted outposts, comms, and the thin line of defenders (only ~767 troops directly on the border against 5,000+ attackers). Many civilians were left fighting alone with whatever weapons they had.

Full picture took time amid the fog of war. Helicopters and air assets engaged faster, but ground reinforcement was delayed.

"Armed combat zone" reality check. Israel is not a place where civilians casually stroll around with ARs like some frontier fantasy. Pre-Oct 7, civilian gun ownership was low — around 6-7 firearms per 100 people, with strict licensing, training requirements, and limits (usually one handgun). Most armed people you see in photos are soldiers on duty or reserves. After Oct 7, they loosened rules and approved tens of thousands more permits, but it's still nothing like the US. The heavy armament image comes mostly from mandatory military service and reservists.

The border itself was fortified with smart fences, cameras, and troops — yet Hamas used simple tools, deception, and mass to breach it. The failure wasn't lack of guns; it was intelligence failure, doctrinal complacency, and being unprepared for the scale despite the warnings that existed.Bottom line: Oct 7 exposed real weaknesses in Israel's defense posture. It doesn't prove "gun control works" or that armed civilians are pointless — the opposite, actually, as armed settlers and off-duty soldiers saved lives where they could respond. It proves that even capable militaries can be caught flat-footed by fanatics who study your weaknesses and time their attack perfectly. Israel has since destroyed most of Hamas's organized military capacity in Gaza while facing unprecedented international pressure for doing so. The underlying threat (groups whose charter calls for Israel's elimination) hasn't disappeared.

Too bad none of the people at the concert or in the nearby homes had cell phones or they could have contacted the authorities. 🤡

AFATGK, they were not killed while fulfilling a combat role, or in a fighting posture.

Forward deployed yes but killed only because within missile range. Was it a classroom training assignment? Not sure.

I get it. That refueling plane that crashed a couple of weeks ago I guess you can say was technically not in a combat role but I think one woman died in that crash.

Oh wow, what a brilliant take: ‘Too bad none of the people at the concert or in the nearby homes had cell phones or they could have contacted the authorities.

Peak 🤡. You absolute brain-dead troglodyte. In your single-digit-IQ fever dream, every clusterfuck is just a signal-bar issue, not the towering human incompetence, panic, and malice that actually got people killed. Newsflash, genius: phones existed. Calls were made. The failure was people — exactly like the drooling keyboard cope you’re serving up right now.

Keep sniffing your own farts from the cheap seats, you premium midwit jester. The real clown show is watching you pretend technology fixes the exact brand of stupidity you’re proudly displaying.

Canadian infantry vet here. It is morally wrong and evil to put women in harm’s way. It prohibits my ability to do my job as well. We’re wired to protect. It’s also very demoralizing to a country to have their women dying in wars. It would be a bit different in an invasion of our homeland but no less tragic.

Amen, bro. It’s just a matter of time before some contrarian know-it-all FReeper brings up the women who serve in the Israeli military but Israel has a population of what, maybe 12 million all day while we have a population of at least 330 million? Apples and oranges. Or should I say figs and pomegranates.

In modern times, wounds that require more than three days of hospitalization are usually just 20% of total wounded.

Not insignificant, but the 365 wounded include about 50% that required no hospitalization at all.
