A Great Awakening — Wonderful film for Easter Week
IMDB ^ | April 5, 2026 | various

One of the most defining moments in American history is the unlikely friendship between the English minister George Whitefield, who preached freedom in Christ, and Benjamin Franklin, a scientific skeptic.

I saw this wonderful film and was blown away. A new hymn in the style of colonial hymns was written especially for this movie. The authenticity of the sets and costumes brought to life the pivotal years leading up to the creation of our Constitution, and two of the men who helped enshrine our God-given liberties in law.

Most of them were probably illegal. That is not “Hope for us”.

Most of them were in their 20s or younger. Most in their 20s were married with kids...and pregnant wife. The kids are 2d generation anchor babies. Most in their 20s are 1st generation anchor babies. Many of the true “immigrants” are legal. Many of the “immigrants” are illegal/undocumented. Many of the formerly illegals married a citizen...as my wife did... and obtained a visa...and then became naturalized citizens...as my wife did.

In one extended family there are: 2d generation, 1st generation anchor babies and legal ... by whatever means and illegal. They are pro-life, pro-family, pro-work, anti-welfare, pro-10 commandments, pro-Bible.

Face it they are here. They are the future.

That is wonderful. Also our orthodox Lutheran Church (LSMS) out in the exurbs had 30 kids in its Youth Choir this morning, and around 20 kids in the Children’s Handbell Choir. There is a future for the church! Not only did families with kids show up for Easter, but they came for many rehearsals before Easter!

Sorry buddy, they are not the future and President Trump is now ramping up Phase II of his deporting process where the focus will not be on Criminal Illegal Aliens, but workplace enforcement.

He will remove many of them and the US will be better without these leeches as many of them are stealing social services meant for US citizens.

They need be gone. They need to leave willingly and on their own and then they can come back legally.

The time was the time. Judging to today’s “standards” is something fools do. A hundred years from now some fool will judge today by their “standards”.

Today our country is the largest producer of pornography in the world, and we have allowed conditions that involve sex slavery, trafficking of adults and children, and a second tier of residents who are here illegally, but have been encouraged to come here and live in limbo. By comparison, chattel slavery was no more evil than this.

“deporting process where the focus will not be on Criminal Illegal Aliens”

If this is true, it will be a big mistake with several repercussions.
1) It will be legally much more difficult. To be in the US is a privilege. To remove (deport) is removal of the privilege. But deporting non-criminals will be much more complex.
1a) It will be much more expensive than targeting criminals. We don’t have the money to do this. These immigrants pay taxes. There will be a big drop in taxes at both federal, state and local level. These immigrant pay rent & those landlords pay taxes.
1b) It will require much larger, more expensive detention centers. Taking away the PRIVILEGE to be here is one thing. Detention centers that inevitably will infringe on RIGHTS. Everyone, illegal, legal and citizens have RIGHTS.
1c) The PROTESTS which currently have little support will grow much larger and have massive support. Do you think the citizen Catholics and Pentecostals are going to sit idly by while their churches are emptied of most of their members?

2. targeting non-criminal paper-work violators of immigration will result is MASSIVE defeat of MAGA in Nov 2026. Much of the Pro-Life Christian Right will not support this. Much of the free market capitalist voters and donors will not suppor this. Deporting paper-work violators is repeal of the very words “FREE MARKET”. If there is no FREE MARKET in labor there is no FREE MARKET.

4. The result will be exactly the opposite of what is intended. Far left SOCIALISTS will win in Nov 2026...win big with veto proof majorities. They will reverse not just Trump on immigration but common sense of every prior year.

The simple, logical fact is that there is no good reason to deport hard working illegals who don’t murder, rape....DUI Drive and don’t collect welfare.

I am both a Christian and a Free Market Capitalist first and second, before most other labels.

We did go to see this movie at Emagine Canton last evening. Very much worth the time and effort, an excellent movie. According to my sweetheart our first dinner and a movie date since we went to see The Hunt for Red October, but the film broke and we got rain checks, some 36 years ago. Good Grief!

The point of the movie was the influence Whitefield had on Franklin and included John Wesley's friendship with Whitefield but not the split of Arminian and Calvinistic Methodists. When I get the chance I want to look up Franklin's speech in the motion to restore prayer to congressional sessions, and his use of human carried carriage rather than horse drawn.

So glad you enjoyed it. I can't wait to buy the DVD and show it at church.

I've read about six Franklin biographies, and I'm sure his speech was in several of them, because it was so familiar when I heard it on the screen. One of the most complete biographies is Walter Isaacson's Benjamin Franklin: An American Life (2004). I also cherish several others, certainly including his own autobiography.

I, too, found the man-powered sedan chair curious, but I know Franklin was appalled by the horse manure in the streets, and actually invented a cart with slats, lined with hay, so that workers could scoop it onto the hay, and any moisture would drip through into the gutter. The Philadelphia colonists had to recreate or invent every civic system.

I also have a copy of Exactly this ; Benjamin Franklin Autobiography One of the many books my Dad left for me when he passed. I never read it, but on a quick perusal it doesn't seem to have that speech in it.

On a quick search, Franklin might be the most written about of all the founding fathers. And this year might be a great one to read at least one about him.

I think he wrote the autobiography some years before the speech. Another one I loved was The Most Dangerous Man in America: Scenes from the Life of Benjamin Franklin by Catherine Drinker Bowen (1974). Happy exploring one of the greatest American thinkers!

Love this comparison:
