The gov't debt will kill this Republic unless the drunken-sailor spending by Congress stops. The best chance to stop it: perhaps the line-item veto.
The debt is now over $37 trillion dollars! To put that into perspective, suppose each dollar is a second in time. Then:
$1 million = 11 days, 13 hours, 46 minutes, 40 seconds
$1 billion = 31 years, 8 months, 18 days, 1 hour, 46 minutes, 40 seconds
$1 trillion = 31,688 years, 8 months, 18 days, 1 hour, 46 minutes, 40 seconds
Congress MUST stop spending.
Given the uncovered corruption and the magnitude of the debt, it might be time to try again.
Fiscal discipline ONLY comes when money creation is out of the hands of politicians. There has never been a case in history where unbacked, fiat money has not led to currency debasement and collapse of government and society. Printed, fiat money is pure heroin for politicians, particularly democratically elected ones.
This was well known to our founders. That's why they specified gold and silver as money.
The only good news is that other countries have some form of the same system, so in terms of relative power, which nations are destroying themselves faster than us?

The way our system works now and since the inception of the 3rd Central Bank, ALL Monies from ALL sources are used to pay off existing Treasury Bills that are expiring and coming DUE. EVERY LAST NICKEL the Government spends is created out of thin air as Brand New Debt, yes Social Security is also included. NOT A NICKEL of the Debt can ever be paid without Abolishing CREDIT MONEY and the 3rd Central Bank that came up with this fraudulent practice.
