An American journalist was reportedly kidnapped by Iran-backed militant group Kataib Hezbollah in the Iraqi capital Baghdad — with terrifying surveillance footage showing armed men dragging her into the back of a car.
Tuesday’s abduction of Shelly Kittleson, 49, from Monticello, Wisconsin, was confirmed by Al-Monitor, the independent media outlet for which she had written.
“We are deeply alarmed by the kidnapping of Al-Monitor contributor Shelly Kittleson in Iraq on Tuesday. We call for her safe and immediate release,” Al-Monitor said in a statement.
“We stand by her vital reporting from the region and call for her swift return to continue her important work,” the statement concluded.
Footage from local outlets shared on X reportedly shows Kittleson — who has written extensively for BBC World, Politico, and Foreign Policy — being bundled into the back of a car by armed men after they stopped her at a busy intersection in Baghdad.

A bit on the pale side but a looker nonetheless. Should she be there? You tell me.
She put herself in Harm’s Way.
That reporting assignment could have gone to someone else.
Maybe she wants a Nobel Prize and best seller book out of it.
This is the kind of reporting I would have expected from
South African reporter Lara Logan about 20 years ago.
Lara is now 55.
Praying for her safety and quick release.
Total time of the hostage taking in Israel from the October invasion to the last person’s remains returned was 843 days.
Let’s not fear the worst.
Prayers up for that woman.
No American is safe in an Islamic country, and certainly not an American woman by herself. I hate to think what will happen to her.
Shouldn’t have been there. Should have stayed in Wisconsin.
There was a male and female couple blundering into a war zone on a hiking vacation and I can’t remember the nationality of the terrorist who confronted them outside with an automatic weapon pointed at them but he motioned to them to step toward him. He then smiled and pointed to the ground, saying “You now in -———, not free now.” He tricked them into trespassing internationally a foot across the border line and held them for ransom for months. State Department had to compromise to get them free.

LOL! A terrorist worried legal technicalities?
We don’t owe anything to Iraq now, right? Maybe make an example to Iran of what large bombs can do in 2026.
I remember that. I think it happened in the first few months of Obama’s first term. They should never have been in that area in the first place, just ‘hanging out’.
US was mincy about their being in the other country illegally once they stepped across the line. Wish I could remember the detail. But it was a really bad hiking vacation idea.
“they stepped across the line”
If there was a line the hikers could see they weren’t tricked. They were coerced.
And the media will blame Trump.
She reminds me of Saint Pancake!
So Baghdad is safe enough that ginger single females feel its safe enough to drive around alone?
Sad news. May God Bless and protect her from evil.
She was warned this might happen beforehand.
