NYC lawmaker wants to force Big Apple to go dark after 11 p.m. — and critics say it’s a criminal’s dream bill (only 4.83 years left)

Critics say she’s not the brightest bulb!

A state lawmaker has a dim-witted plan that would force the Empire State Building and nearly all of New York City to go dark after 11 p.m. — but detractors say the plan would let criminals run wild under the cloak of night.

The “Dark Skies Protection Act,” sponsored by Manhattan Assemblywoman Deborah Glick, would require Big Apple businesses and residents to hit the off switch between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. to save energy, help migratory birds and avoid “light pollution,” according to the proposed bill.

The goal is to “preserve and enhance the state’s dark sky while promoting safety for people, birds and other wildlife, conserving energy and reducing our carbon footprint, and preserving the aesthetic qualities of the night sky,” the legislation declares.

“Our ancestors were able to experience a night sky full of stars, but now 80% of Americans can no longer see the Milky Way and experience its profound beauty.”

The bill, which would go into effect in January 2028, notes that lights “used for travel and public safety would be exempt.”

But critics were quick to mock the lights-out bill as no bright idea — saying Gotham in a blackout amounts to a dream for crooks, thugs and gangsters.

They make lights that are designed to keep the sky dark while illuminating below. Next time need a replacement or new construction, install one of those

People in New York City should be at home in their domicile no later than 9 PM, behind locked,
bolted, and chained doors. They should stay there until at least 1/2 hour past sunrise.

Do this For Safety's sake, for the love of God!

Given that the vast majority of New York city people can’t or refuse to legally carry.
That may be a bad idea.

I live in rural Hawaii,
a clear moonless night sky
is an awesome thing to behold.
BTW I always have a shot gun
within reach at home.
Wild pigs.

Another NYC policy I can fully support. Free grocery stores. Price controls. High taxes. Free fast buses. Commie Islamist for mayor.

I lived in NYC at the time of the 1977 black out.

Compared to today, those were civilized times and yet all Hell broke loose.

One can only imagine what a 2026 black out would be.

New York used to be called New Amsterdam. Cut to the chase. Call it New Havana.

Migratory birds? I was not aware that birds migrated at night. And I used to live on Long Island, those nasty geese stopped migrating south for some reason. They’re a danged foul nuisance.

“I was not aware that birds migrated at night.”

They do.

There are measures that can be taken to reduce bird impacts with buildings that don’t involve turning off the whole city’s lights.

I think it’s a great idea but block all exits and let no one out and leave power off for several weeks. Should thin the herd significantly.

I am fine with requiring light be directed where it is needed and not shining up into the sky.
