I do not think this applies anymore.
The young people do not know how to work, the younger, the worse.
Employers nowadays love to hire older folks, because their work ethic!
At age 69, for the first time I used my experience in politics and vote fraud to leave IL for GA and consult on the voter registration project being designed and developed in India.
Then I shifted over to Medicaid (fraud, efficiency, reports, analysis, a little bit of everything) til age 81. Now at age 82 I can’t take it doing nothing but daytime TV. I want another gig.
In the interview tell tyem:
1. I understand the job and can do it.
2. I actually show up and stay until quitting time.
3. I do plan on coming IN to work, 5 times/wk.
4. I speak English and am a legal citizen.
5. I don’t need a cappuccino machine.
What country are you in? Most employers would rather hire a young person that works one hour than an older person who works 10 hours.
6. I don't suicide bomb my work.
7. I won't miss work for soccer, I mean football.
8. I think the royals are stuck up weenies.
Exactly.
My friend was in a meeting where the person conducting the meeting mentioned a few times they were millennial , and that's why he did things a certain way. She later checked and was able to dig up, and was born in 1977, so not Millennial.
I just got hired at age 65 because the 20 something was lazy and didn’t want to work.
Buy rental property. it’s a 24/7 job. Especially in “tenant friendly” areas where you have to be part detective, part psychologist, part social media expert as well as paralegal and handyman.
I HAVE DONE ACCOUNTING SINCE 1957.
I BECAME SELF-EMPLOYED IN 1980 & GOT CLIENTS WHO WERE SMALL BUSINESSES. NEVER CHARGED MUCH. NEVER GOT A BOUNCED CHECK.
NEVER MADE ALOT OF $$$$$$$-—BUT HAD CLIENTS WHO APPRECIATED ME.
DID BOOKS FOR ONE GUY FOR 53 YEARS—— NIGHTS/WEEKENDS BEFORE 1980. HE RETIRED IN 2022 AT AGE 84. RETIRED ME AT AGE 82.
6. YOU DO NOT NEED A “SAFE ROOM” TO CRY IN.
And yet, you never learned to use a Caps Lock key.
Can't imagine why. I'm delightsome.
During my working life I was most always at school. Schools my employer sent me too, or my pursuit of a University degree,
You would not believe how many Coeds were
shocked when my wife and daughter showed
up at school to visit for lunch.
Even in my retirement I went to school.
I learned a new skill to get a job that
augmented my income.
Today I learn from internet interactions.
Even though I consider most Democrats and RINOs
to be stark raving idiots, I seriously
consider their words.
You can use a pile of shit to grow a new crop.
Can't imagine why. I'm delightsome. And cut 'n paste like a champ.
Something needs to be applicable. I have significant experience and track record of success. I get interviews and requests for second interviews and then ghosted.
Been out of work 4 months; first time in 35 years I have had to actively pursue a position.
I hear it is all about connections and references now - too bad I was so engaged in my work and team that I wasn’t good at networking or whatever they define as networking these days.
No big debts; just month to month bills; ridesharing can make up the difference - been trying for one week; I guess my logistics knowledge has helped me hit $35/hr immediately. If gas prices cut 50% I would see 10% OR which is pretty good -it is fun but doesn’t replace a career choice
It certainly applied 12 years ago when this 62 year old Journeyman electrician was abruptly laid off from an awesome job at a small school district in Oregon.
I was drawing unemployment and searching hard for another electrician job.
Who's going to hire a 62 year old Journeyman electrician?
As it turned out, nobody would so I took early retirement, applied for social security, cashed in my 401-K and moved to sunny E. WA state where I sit now, a 75 year old who does nothing but takes naps, it's a good life!
“That’s partly because older people are seen as being harder to train and more expensive.”
The life expectancy of an older worker is not as high so for them to continue with the company 10 or 20 years is statistically not very likely.
Great find Nick! Thank you for posting.
The place I worked at hired all ages. Of course, they were desperate to. I’ve noticed over time people that got hired were dumber. It would take longer and longer to train them.
