I do not think this applies anymore.
The young people do not know how to work, the younger, the worse.
Employers nowadays love to hire older folks, because their work ethic!
What country are you in? Most employers would rather hire a young person that works one hour than an older person who works 10 hours.
My friend was in a meeting where the person conducting the meeting mentioned a few times they were millennial , and that's why he did things a certain way. She later checked and was able to dig up, and was born in 1977, so not Millennial.
I HAVE DONE ACCOUNTING SINCE 1957.
I BECAME SELF-EMPLOYED IN 1980 & GOT CLIENTS WHO WERE SMALL BUSINESSES. NEVER CHARGED MUCH. NEVER GOT A BOUNCED CHECK.
NEVER MADE ALOT OF $$$$$$$-—BUT HAD CLIENTS WHO APPRECIATED ME.
DID BOOKS FOR ONE GUY FOR 53 YEARS—— NIGHTS/WEEKENDS BEFORE 1980. HE RETIRED IN 2022 AT AGE 84. RETIRED ME AT AGE 82.
Something needs to be applicable. I have significant experience and track record of success. I get interviews and requests for second interviews and then ghosted.
Been out of work 4 months; first time in 35 years I have had to actively pursue a position.
I hear it is all about connections and references now - too bad I was so engaged in my work and team that I wasn’t good at networking or whatever they define as networking these days.
No big debts; just month to month bills; ridesharing can make up the difference - been trying for one week; I guess my logistics knowledge has helped me hit $35/hr immediately. If gas prices cut 50% I would see 10% OR which is pretty good -it is fun but doesn’t replace a career choice
It certainly applied 12 years ago when this 62 year old Journeyman electrician was abruptly laid off from an awesome job at a small school district in Oregon.
I was drawing unemployment and searching hard for another electrician job.
Who's going to hire a 62 year old Journeyman electrician?
As it turned out, nobody would so I took early retirement, applied for social security, cashed in my 401-K and moved to sunny E. WA state where I sit now, a 75 year old who does nothing but takes naps, it's a good life!
The young people do not know how to work, the younger, the worse. Employers nowadays love to hire older folks, because their work ethic!
I've found this out. One study showed that over 60% of the 2024 college graduates hired were fired by their companies after 6 months. Employers are looking for people who
a) Show up on time and
b.) Don't smell like shit.
