PITTSBURGH -- Plenty of kids know the joy of a snow day, but what about a draft day?
Pittsburgh Public Schools students are about to find out.
The district notified staff and families that it will operate remotely April 22-24 as the city prepares for and hosts the NFL draft. With city officials anticipating up to 700,000 visitors and travel disruptions around the region, the school district determined that it would be less disruptive to students to transition to "asynchronous teaching and learning."
"Our priority is maintaining continuity of learning while recognizing the extraordinary circumstances the city will experience during the NFL Draft," Superintendent Dr. Wayne N. Walters said in a statement. "Transitioning to asynchronous learning allows us to support students academically while helping families navigate the logistical challenges expected across the region."
That means students will be given assignments and "learning activities" from their teachers through online platforms.
Reached for comment, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy referred to the Pittsburgh Public Schools news release and said the league played no role in the decision.

This is complete zenith idiocy. When the ‘68 Tigers were about to play their first World Series home game against the Cardinals, the Principal announced that the game would be on in the gym. We all sat on the floor and going home was not an option.
Perhaps the NFL could get Bad Bunny to direct traffic? I’ll stick with college football, thanks.
700,000 visitors and travel disruptions ... linked to the NFL draft? What the #@!?????
It’s not like this was something important, like a TikTok influencer filming a new brand launch. At least that event might hand out free samples.
I hope the next NFL commissioner will get back to basics and hold the draft in an IHOP in Dubuque. But I suppose tv calls the shots, as it does for everything in big time sports.
We should probably be grateful that the NFL draft doesn’t involve cheerleaders in pasties and hip-hop acts between each round. Yet.

I remember when the NFL draft was not a week long, manufactured Mardi Gras type of event. The NFL brass would meet for a day or two in New York or Las Vegas and conduct the draft. The next day on your local news you'd see a short segment on who your team drafted, and that was it.
Teachers don’t want to teach.
Can’t expect kids to learn.
Odd how so many mayors, superintendents, police chiefs, principles and other “officials” come from less than 13% of the population.
That’s dei for ya.
Gotta have so many from each category.
Saw it for 30 years working in the DoD.
It did nothing but make those that actually deserved their positions work that much harder to compensate for the token hires.
All THAT did was, as you can imagine, create animosity among the workforce.
As far as this story goes, from the looks of dudes bow tie, I’m guessing he’s only interested in tight ends and wide receivers.
This is all about the scourge of gambling
I have to check and see if GREEN BAY (who hosted the draft last year) closed their school for the draft!!
Someone added an extra 0 in that estimate. The Superbowl does not get that many people to the host city.
“This is all about the scourge of gambling”
Yep. I remember when they started the lottery in MI. The stated goal was to put the Mob out of the numbers racket. Now look what it has blossomed into. In principle, I am not opposed to gambling, but in practice, it is largely done by the people who can least afford it, and it is left to the rest of us to make sure the affected kids have food and shelter. And the ironic part: that numbers racket had a better return than the lottery ever did.
It is time for government to stop promoting vice.
The 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay had a total attendance of 600,000
I just don’t get it. 700,000 traveling to watch this. I wouldn’t walk across the street for it. And I am a former NFL season ticket holder. I totally gave up on the NFL when they gave up on football and showed that it is only about the money. They don’t give a crap about anything else. Screw them.
“Odd how so many mayors, superintendents, police chiefs, principles and other “officials” come from less than 13% of the population.”
The group only has to make up the majority of the Democratic voters in a place.
And they didn’t advertise on TV, and they only had one game to play. Now the state has 10 daily numbers plus dozens of scratch off games that suckers can waste their money on. The old mobsters never had any of that.
“700,000 visitors”
Does the whole area have even 70,000 hotel/motel rooms?
