California’s petroleum market watchdog is warning about price gouging at some gas stations charging over $7 or even $8 a gallon as the Iran war sends oil prices soaring.
The average price of gas in California is currently $5.66, but as of Friday, a Chevron station in Essex is charging $9.69, another in Los Angeles’ Chinatown is charging $8.71, and one in Vidal Junction is charging $7.79, according to GasBuddy, which tracks prices across the country.
“Our team is vigilantly monitoring the retail, wholesale, and spot markets,” said Tai Milder, director of the California Energy Commission Division of Petroleum Market Oversight, in a statement. “Any reports of unfair practices or market manipulation will be taken seriously, and we will not hesitate to refer any illegal conduct for further investigation and prosecution.” […]
The extremely high prices at some gas stations in California “are not supported by current crude oil prices or gasoline futures,” the division said. …

I remember when democrats wanted 10 a gallon gas.
Liberal Paradise...
Stalin blamed his disastrous economic policies on the kulaks (relatively prosperous farmers). Will Newsom and his pals go that same route?
I would NOT call that 'price gouging'. Essex is in the middle of nowhere in the Mojave Desert (my kind of place ;^). If you find yourself in Essex and are so unprepared that you need gas when you get there, you should be thankful that it's available at any price. I was in Shoshone a year or two back, and overheard some city dude complaining about the gas price there - he was lucky they didn't refuse to sell to him...
;^)
Charge $5.66 per gallon, then the environmental / replacement fund fee. Then the sample of the gasoline at time of delivery fee. The electric fee to run the pump. The safety trading and equipment fund fee. The fill out the local and state required paperwork fee. The monitor of car fill fee. The replacement of the fire extinguisher fee. The safety communication equipment (phone), gas station personnel retirement fee, health care fee, paid vacation fee, employee parking fee.
That’s how you yield $10.00 on a gallon sale. You know, government 101 for revenue while still complying with the law…..
California, in of itself is the greatest fraud scheme in the history of America. Then again, there is the rat party...
Washington State also.
Refineries have either moved out or closed in CA. There are no refineries left.
None of them could afford to do business in CA.
Hence, higher gas prices.
Politicians do everything they can to Jack up the price of gas then they issue warnings about raising the price of gas. Don’t tell me so many people are still voting for these retards, I just don’t believe it.
Gasoline price gouging in California can’t be balmed on anyone or anything else California owns it.
Greeed has caused so many to leave the state for ever it’s a s**t hole 100%.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer state. They deserve it. I am sure the Greenies love it!
"Price gouging" has always been sore point with me. Even in an emergency, prices can play a role. Let's say there is a weather emergency and people are selling bottles of water for $6.00 a piece. Okay, seems high, but to prevent the once-in-a-generation inconvenience of having to pay extra for the water, the state maintains a permanent bureaucratic regulatory apparatus through the attorney general's office and the consumer protection agencies that costs the average taxpayer much more than the supposed price gouging that is going on. Further, the higher price for water will encourage the market to supply needed water to the affected areas. I trust the markets far more than government bureaucrats. How much does the California Energy Commission Division of Petroleum Market Oversight cost the taxpayers year over year.
Agree they prove their stupidity no limit to it.
They would be ecstatic if everybody had $10.
There is no price gouging because there’s no supply shortage. It costs what it costs, pay it and STFU. You don’t want to pay that much? I understand. Go somewhere else. I hear it’s cheaper in Saudi Arabia.
13 in CA today, down from 50
