The blockbuster weight loss drug sold as Ozempic and Wegovy will soon go generic in countries that are home to 40 percent of the world’s population, significantly lowering the price of a costly medicine that had been largely unaffordable to nearly all but the wealthiest people.
...On Saturday, Novo Nordisk, the company that until now has had a monopoly on selling the drug, will lose patent protection in several of the world’s most populous countries. The first generic versions are expected to arrive in India as soon as this weekend. In the coming months, the generics are also expected to become available in China, Canada, Brazil, Turkey and South Africa. ...The expiration of the patents presents more trouble for Novo Nordisk, whose stock has plummeted as global competition has eroded its market share. At its peak in mid-2024, the Danish drugmaker was the most valuable public company in Europe.
Eli Lilly, an American company that sells its weight loss drug as Mounjaro for diabetes and as Zepbound for obesity, poses the biggest competitive threat. Eli Lilly is expected to retain patent protection for another decade in most major markets.

There is a lot of false hype around Ozempic. Its not a miracle drug. It doesn’t make fat people thin. The average weight loss is about 10 to 20 pounds and that is with the potential for side effects. And a significant minority of people don’t lose any weight on it. If a bunch of poor people start taking generic Ozempic as a weight loss drug who don’t have diabetes risk, they are putting themselves at risk. They probably won’t lose much weight if any (especially if they don’t change their eating habits or other lifestyle choices) and will have side effects.
Many effective drugs are under patent protection even though generic versions exist and have regulatory approval. Big Pharma and their armies of lawyers are making sure that their monopolistic profits are preserved long after the original patents have expired. They are thieves who operate under the protection of the courts and allied politicians, and of the ex-government functionaries who populate the corporate offices of drug companies.
I can see all the fatties are here, the critics... I think most of you lecturing are sporting a 30 BMI. Such a busybody gossip some of you are.
And no I am not on the shot... I am 60 and 153lbs at 5’9”, studying for my BJJ black belt. Never felt better. But I don’t sh*t on people who are battling the weight. Some of you are real morons, “Just eat less and move more.” What insight! Why didn’t they think of that? Some of you are just what they say you are, angry, self-interested cranks with a limited capacity for compassion.

If you manifested symptoms of what these drugs do, and they didn’t exist, they would be running tests to see what was wrong with you.
Why would you take anything that actually causes your body to go into starvation, with reduced nutrient absorption? No matter what people say, that is what is happening - you are subjecting your body to starvation on these things.
For full disclosure, I have a more outside view of this topic, because it is something I don’t need in the first place.
The risks of obesity far outweigh the risks.
There are a lot of people taking it that are far from obese. It’s going to create a whole new wave of anorexia.

Our meat, fish, chicken, pork primarily comes from Walden. They deliver to our house once a month. It is local farm raised or wild caught seafood in a two person serving size.
We actually suspended Walden deliveries because I shot a deer in the backyard last November. I ended up with two boxes(about 60 pounds) of venison. Steaks, roasts, burger and sausage.
We also try to buy pasta sauce that is more natural. None of the major brands. Also nothing made with GMOs. Including pasta. No wheat from fields where they sprayed weed killers.
The pasta in Europe/Italy, even the Barilla, does not have the same wheat/chemicals in it that the crap sold in most of our grocery stores. The lettuce, spinach and other greens typically come from the green houses right here in New England. Like Lef farms out of Loudon, NH. Lettuce grown indoors 24/7 that is never touched by human hands. No E coli.
Basically, we are trying to be very conscious of what we now put in our mouth. Including when we go out to eat. I would rather pay more than eat crappy food from one of the chain “restaurants”.

It goes on further to identify areas of warnings and precautions naming problem:
Pancreatitis: Has been reported in clinical trials. Discontinue promptly if pancreatitis is suspected. Do not restart if pancreatitis is confirmed (5.2).
Diabetic Retinopathy Complications: Has been reported in a clinical trial.
Patients with a history of diabetic retinopathy should be monitored (5.3).
Never share an OZEMPIC pen between patients, even if the needle is changed (5.4).
Hypoglycemia: When OZEMPIC is used with an insulin secretagogue or insulin, consider lowering the dose of the secretagogue or insulin to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia (5.5).
Acute Kidney Injury: Monitor renal function in patients with renal impairment reporting severe adverse gastrointestinal reactions (5.6).
Hypersensitivity Reactions: Discontinue OZEMPIC if suspected and promptly seek medical advice (5.7).
It also says that with a sound exercise program and proper diet, it will do it’s job with fitness efforts and protection from diabetes.
Carefully watch the commercials for this and other GLP-1 products and they say in the fine print:
Not to be used as a weight loss product.
It also appears it can be harmful if used period. And this is the way people wish to lose weight if they are already working with a diet and exercise program many times for ego? Russian roulette.
