Your next car purchase comes with an unwelcome passenger: a federal mandate requiring surveillance technology that monitors your every blink, glance, and head nod. Thanks to Section 24220 of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, NHTSA must finalize rules forcing all new passenger vehicles to include “advanced impaired driving prevention technology”—essentially turning your dashboard into a judgment-free zone that’s anything but judgment-free.
The Technology That’s Watching
Infrared cameras and sensors create a constant biometric assessment of driver alertness and sobriety.
The tech involves infrared cameras mounted on steering columns or A-pillars, tracking eye movement, pupil dilation, and drowsiness patterns. Unlike the breathalyzer ignition interlocks from DUI convictions, these systems operate passively—no blowing required. Your car simply watches and decides whether you’re fit to drive.
If the AI determines you’re impaired (blood alcohol ≥0.08% or showing fatigue), it can prevent ignition startup or limit vehicle speed. Think Minority Report, but for your morning commute.

I have zero doubt this tech will be buggy as heck and prevent unimpaired people from driving.
Not all things that technology makes possible are even desirable.
Another computer chip that can be removed.
More invasion of privacy
But it is for the children. It is to protect you.
It is necessary for you to give up your liberty and privacy to protect you from drunks, druggies and other impaired persons. We also need to take your guns away to “protect” you.
Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act , what does this have to do with driving
You mean it won’t also prevent some wack job from driving his car full of explosives into a school or your house?
Truckers will love it
This has to get stopped.
Also, government being able to hijack your car must stop, too.
I don’t care how cool they make them look because any car that does that is already an ugly car.

So I guess at my age, a 2026 car would be the last I might ever buy.
Or parade.
Perhaps the wearing of tin foil hats will become the fashion statement of the day. I like to know what legislation is causing this loss of privacy.
He won’t
Pretty much decided when my newest car needs a substantial amount of maintenance I’m probably gonna buy a top end large BMW or Mercedes pre-2005 with no connectivity/modem/satellite integrated and restore it—somewhat modern performance and comfort without any remote access or super pricey software/firmware I cant manage myself
I am actually looking at buying a 2015 Tacoma. Just because they still had naturally aspirated V6s and a linkage system to operate the transmission. In 2017 they went to a drive by wire shifting system for the transmission.
I certainly do not want ANY vehicle made since the switch that turns off the engine when you come to a stop.
My wife has a 2017 Honda CRV. You could still turn off that “feature” on that vehicle. The new ones make it harder to turn off.
My guess is that Trump hasn't heard about this yet and when he does he will put a stop to it.
I can see it now. Car’s shutting off and getting people killed because the drivers were picking their noses and confused the systems. :^{
I seriously doubt that would work.
