Bosses are firing Gen Z grads just months after hiring them—here’s what they say needs to change

After complaining for years that Gen Z grads are difficult to work with, bosses are no longer all talk, no action: Now they’re rapidly firing young workers who aren’t up to scratch just months after hiring them.

The numbers are stark. According to a survey, six in 10 employers admitted they had already sacked the Gen Z workers they had hired fresh out of college.

Intelligent.com, a platform dedicated to helping young professionals navigate the future of work, surveyed nearly 1,000 U.S. business leaders. It found that the class of 2024’s shortcomings are shaping how bosses hire next—and it’s not good news for future grads.(snip)

So where is it going wrong for fresh-faced graduates?

Employers’ gripe with young people today is their lack of motivation or initiative—50% of the leaders surveyed cited that as the reason why things didn’t work out with their new hire.

Bosses also pointed to Gen Z being unprofessional, unorganized, and having poor communication skills as their top reasons for having to sack grads.

Leaders say they have struggled with the latest generation’s tangible challenges, including being late to work and meetings often, not wearing office-appropriate clothing, and using language appropriate for the workspace.

Now, more than half of hiring managers have come to the conclusion that college grads are unprepared for the world of work.

Where I grew up, it was the dumb kids who got out of school early to go to work. That worked against me when I got to college. Many campus employers wouldn’t even give me an interview once I told them I had no experience.

Nah, they suck. Today I gave training and all the Zoomers and one Millennial were constantly on their phones. Only the Gen X guys weren’t on them. Also, the Zoomers use their break time to do absolutely nothing and right when the break is over, that’s when they decide to make their coffee.

“Do high schoolers work anymore? “

No. Insane minimum wage laws made it nearly impossible to pay for the kind of jobs they used to do. Kids used to bag groceries and all sorts of low value jobs. Many of those jobs no longer exist because they are not worth minimum wage.

I have many high school kids working at my small pizza restaurant.

The servers only get $2.35 and hour plus tips. I pay them $5 to start.

Cooks get $8 plus tip pool.

They go home every shift with tip cash.

Older workers I pay more with no tips.

This is nothing that 3 years of mowing lawns at minimum wage can’t fix. That would give them a little perspective about work ethic.

This is a thread from months ago; someone resurrected it today for some reason.

I wonder why.

Try being 15 minutes early.

Very good advice! I just to think the saying (attributed to Woody Allen) that 80-90% of success in life is about 'showing up' wasn't too meaningful. As I've gotten older I think he was at least partially right - but I think 'showing up' means a set of behaviors that show willingness to work.

because simpson96 didn’t know it was already posted. See

After he posted the thread today, the moderator put a link in the new thread to this thread, so somebody clicked on it and made a post here.

Thanks.

I don’t understand how all this stuff works.

I often see duplicate posts of the same article that are closed, with the mods saying ‘search still works’, or just directing to another thread.

But I also see some duplicates that are allowed to stand...

I had a co-worker who spoke of 15 years of experience. After brief acquaintance it was obvious it was 1 year of experience 15 times.

Yes, it's a mark of ignorance and also the mindless acquiescence to zeitgeist groupthink, which is a mark of stupidity.

I'm no prude. I can cuss with the worst of them--and have. But the constant, tiresome, brainless use of the word f-ck is as irritating as the worst of clichés, which is exactly what it is. It reveals much more about the person who spews it out that he/she/it realizes--and it's all very unflattering.

The man I described, who is worthless, jobless, and covered with tattoos and who uses "the f-word a lot" is short in stature, in intellect, and in every other measure and thinks the tattoos, body piercings, and endless use of "the f-word" make him look like a big, important man. I does the opposite.

I believe there are industries that have exceptions. Construction is likely one—you are working “hands on” and with a watchful eye in that trade.

Thank you for the reminder.
