Bosses are firing Gen Z grads just months after hiring them—here’s what they say needs to change

After complaining for years that Gen Z grads are difficult to work with, bosses are no longer all talk, no action: Now they’re rapidly firing young workers who aren’t up to scratch just months after hiring them.

The numbers are stark. According to a survey, six in 10 employers admitted they had already sacked the Gen Z workers they had hired fresh out of college.

Intelligent.com, a platform dedicated to helping young professionals navigate the future of work, surveyed nearly 1,000 U.S. business leaders. It found that the class of 2024’s shortcomings are shaping how bosses hire next—and it’s not good news for future grads.(snip)

So where is it going wrong for fresh-faced graduates?

Employers’ gripe with young people today is their lack of motivation or initiative—50% of the leaders surveyed cited that as the reason why things didn’t work out with their new hire.

Bosses also pointed to Gen Z being unprofessional, unorganized, and having poor communication skills as their top reasons for having to sack grads.

Leaders say they have struggled with the latest generation’s tangible challenges, including being late to work and meetings often, not wearing office-appropriate clothing, and using language appropriate for the workspace.

Now, more than half of hiring managers have come to the conclusion that college grads are unprepared for the world of work.

“Yeah how dare white people point out that H1B and illegals are taking jobs meant for americans”

You act as though none of us have ever discussed those problems before. You need to stop hyperventilating, study a little history - something you obviously were not taught in school - and realize EVERY GENERATION has faced issues!

My Mom & Dad grew up in the Great Depression. Then my Dad and all their brothers fought in WW2. I grew up during Vietnam - where my Dad died. When I graduated from college, Jimmy Carter’s economy was in the toilet.

In 1982, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was...16%! You whine now? Imagine if it cost you 16% interest to buy a house. But of course, we didn’t buy houses right out of college. I was in my upper 30s before I bought a home!

In 1982, the unemployment rate was 10.8%.

Still feeling sorry for yourself? Iran took our embassy hostage for 1.5 years starting in 1979. A few years later, Iranian allies bombed the Beirut barracks, killing 307 people. 241 of them were U.S, mostly US Marines.

Still feel your butt hurting at how tough YOU have it?

I think that was an own, you clown?

Even in the worst of the depression white men did not need to compete with pablo and juan

We did not have H1B and DEI under Carter

You got a home in your 30’s? Newsflash: Most men in their 40’s now cannot afford a home

Also did the military in the 60’s and 70’s and 80’s hire unqualified fat ugly black women to work desk jobs who then forced the white guys in the military to sit through sessions accusing them of “white privilege”?

“Even in the worst of the depression white men did not need to compete with pablo and juan”

Do you realize HOW STUPID YOU ARE? Seriously, you think a comparative handful of Mexicans compared to the GREAT DEPRESSION”? Or 11% unemployment in the early 80s - when we had illegals too?

“You got a home in your 30’s? Newsflash: Most men in their 40’s now cannot afford a home”

Bullshit! If they are moderately successful men - as I was - they can afford a house. For comparison, my grandparents bought THEIR first home when they were 60 - and it was an 800 sq foot home!

Your pussy is hurt because you aren’t man enough to go WORK and learn and struggle to find a job and succeed? EVERYONE has had to do that, un less they were born with a silver spoon in their mouths.

BTW - One of the first jobs I applied for out of college was seasonal. There were NO permanent jobs open in biology at the time! I was told if they could find a high school girl who wanted the job, she would get it over me - and I had my BS degree. Why? AFFIRMATIVE ACTION!

Yes, you pathetic, whining pansy, we had massive, LEGAL DISCRIMINATION enforced by the government against white men IN THE 1980s! It was legal to offer scholarships and jobs to minority ONLY candidates. So stop your pathetic “woe is me” act and get to work. Somewhere. Doing something. And fight to get ahead.

I crown thee king of the boomers

“Or 11% unemployment in the early 80s - when we had illegals too?”

Because early 80’s was the same amount of illegals as of now, right?

“If they are moderately successful men - as I was - they can afford a house”

So then why is home ownership for white men down, also what was the price of a home in 1980 versus now?

“Your pussy is hurt because you aren’t man enough to go WORK and learn and struggle to find a job and succeed”

Yeah lemme just apply for a job when places literally will not hire white men

This is why I started my own business, also I am not raging for myself but for my peers and guys younger than me. Meanwhile ignoramuses like you just show your damn disdain for the younger generations. But don’t worry, all those radicalized Gen Z guys will find someone to run and bring about justice for them, and I guarantee you that justice will involve a lot of violence and when that happens I will not stand in the way because people like you created those conditions.

Correct. It is well that you've finally accepted this reality. I am proud of you.

Your whining and total lack of knowledge about anything prior to 2000 proves my point. And you are too self absorbed to realize it.

“total lack of knowledge about anything prior to 2000”

Says the buffoon who thinks that literally nothing has changed in the job market since the year 2000!

Our kids are in mid- to late-30s. The youngest and oldest ones have people working for them, the youngest has six direct reports. They all have the same complaint about new young hires in their early 20s.

I hear this in spades from contractors who simply cannot find talented help with a good work ethic.

Why do I get the feeling some of this is not so much...

Because you have no direct experience with them?

As my Father said.."Be careful who you ask for help, as they may have been doing it Wrong for 40 years." Thanks Dad.

Indeed. When I was starting up power plants in my early and mid 20s (50 years ago), I had to train crews how to operate the new equipment. I was training people 10-30 years older than me and you can imagine how that went. I saw some horrific and unsafe practices and I would always hear "But that's how Joe taught me to do it and that's how we've always done it here."

"Untraining" those bad habits was a lot harder than training a new, inexperienced person just starting out.

I gave up on my grandkinds. One grandson quit a good county court job after 2 months because it was boring. Maybe I should have spanked their parents and kicked them out of the house when they were 18.

Apparently these young folks let their sense of entitlement get in the way of making an honest effort to LEARN the mission statement of their employers, and adhere to it. But no, a job is just another somewhat meaningless achievement badge to them, and once they have that on their resume, they are almost immediately on the lookout for “something better” before they even learn the elements of their assigned duties.

Working hard these days gets you nothing...

Sounds like you don't know how to choose and employer, or maybe don't work with high skill levels.

I don’t know how old you are, but I predict a difficult future for you.

You’re not even pleasant, which can compensate for a lot of lack in other areas.
