Total Lunar Eclipse Broadcast โ€“ March 3, 2026
Griffith Observatory ^

Posted on 03/03/2026 7:04:35 AM PST by BenLurkin

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes completely into the dark inner shadow, or umbra, cast by the Earth. On March 3, one hundred percent of the round disk of the full Moon slowly moves into the dark shadow, and the bright Moon grows dim. The Moon does not, however, go completely dark. Instead, it usually glows with a copper or red color, a result of sunlight being filtered and bent through the Earthโ€™s atmosphere (much like a sunset).

The lunar eclipse is visible throughout southern California and may be seen easily with the unaided eye, although telescopes or binoculars may enhance the view.

The next partial lunar eclipse will occur on August 27-28, 2026

Advice for Viewing

If skies are clear, the eclipse will be visible to the unaided eye from anywhere in continental United States. It is safe to view a lunar eclipse without any eye protection. You do not need a telescope to see a lunar eclipse. Just go outside and look to the southwest.

I got up early and saw about 60% coverage. There were clouds on the horizon and so hid the total phase as the moon declined in the west.

I’ve seen these enough to know what it looks like. Still it never gets old.

Wife and I got up to see the totality. Clear skies west of Tucson. I’ve seen several lunar eclipses, but this was her first.

I’ve only seen two total solar eclipses, in 1979 and 2017 (we both saw the latter). Next one visible from the U.S. will be in 2044. I hope to see that one too, if I’m still around at 89.

We saw the total solar eclipse in April, 2024 from our driveway. We sat outside with neighbors and had a quick party, about 2-3 hours long. It was so fascinating, beautiful, and a little eerie all at the same time.

God willing, we will be here for the next one same as you.

“We saw the total solar eclipse in April, 2024 from our driveway.”

Same here. All I had to do was walk (carefully) out into the pasture.

I wouldn’t have minded going to see the 2024 eclipse, but my wife was barely a month out of back surgery, so traveling was not an option.

It was such a cool event. I hope I never forget it. All the animals and birds got very quiet as it started getting darker. In our neighborhood there are streetlights that come on automatically when it gets dark. Those lights came on, and were the only lights around. It was like everyone was going to bed in the middle of the day. Then, just as quickly as it got dark, it started brightening up, and the birds & small animals all came back out to play. (We have lots of squirrels, chipmunks, and bunnies around here, as well as deer, fox, raccoons, skunks, possums, etc.)

We had a lot of fun with our neighbors that day. Very memorable event.
