BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — With spring break on the horizon, Mexico’s resort cities have long been a top destination for college students and vacationers looking to get away for the holiday. However, on the heels of last week’s cartel violence, some travelers are canceling or considering a different destination.
“Cancellations for those areas, definitely,” Renee Pilley, Senior Travel Advisor with AAA in Amherst, said in response to some of Mexico’s resort cities. “People are just … they don’t want to take a chance.”
Violence broke out in reaction to the Mexican government’s operation that killed one of their most notorious drug lords, known as ‘El Mencho,’ resulting in a rippling effect this week on tourism ahead of spring break.
“People who’ve come in and said they were thinking of Mexico, now they’re thinking of a couple other different destinations,” Pilley said. “Maybe the Dominican Republic, maybe Jamaica.”
WIVB News 4 caught up with a local spring breaker, Austin Garman, at Buffalo Niagara International Airport, who said Mexico might have been a thought before the violence, but instead he feels Finland is a safer bet.
“I’m going to Finland for some family and whatnot over there, but I don’t know,” Garman said. “I don’t really feel safe there, even Cancun has areas over there that are unsafe. No future spring breaks in Mexico.”

People that can afford to send their kids off to places on spring break are 💩heads. Teach them something they can survive on. GOD I hate watching idiots.
Makes me laugh. Every article relating to this cartel violence has at the very beginning “mexico’s army killed.” If you believe that then continue reading.
“were thinking of Mexico, now they’re thinking of a couple other different destinations,” Pilley said. “Maybe the Dominican Republic, maybe Jamaica.””
Good to see people being sensible again. Safe vacationing is no joking matter. That’s why I always recommend the Dominican Republic, or Jamaica. /s
Danger lurks below our Southern Border and danger lurks inside our Southern Border without a Southern Border.
Finland is great spring break destination to be discovered.
Sunbathing on frozen beaches, cross-country skiing, ice fishing!
And booze is very, very expensive over there!
How about Somalia? It becoming a very rich country these days and if the U. S. fraud money keeps being funneled there it will be the new Dubai!
I find the idiots amusing...I point out their stupidity to my grandkids as examples of what not to be.
Finland is best known for one thing. White people. It’s one of the whitest countries in the world.
I remember seeing an “Man in the street” (irony intended) interview a few years ago with a typical young American woman. She didn’t like America. We were not diverse. We are racist. She wanted to live in a better country.
Where would that be?
Oh, she said, there are many countries better than the US.
Can you give me an example of a better country?
She had to think about that for a bit, then she suggested Sweden, Norway, or Finland. You know: diverse countries that were less racist than the US.
Spring break- if we went to my grandparents house that was the trip. Otherwise it was clean your closet time.
Isn’t it funny when you ask these people where they would like to go, they mention countries and places they have never been.
They see pictures and think, “Oh that looks like a beautiful place to go”
“People that can afford to send their kids off to places on spring break are 💩heads.”
Really? Sounds like petty jealousy to me.
Good point.
They are “pining for the fjords” without thinking about how cold and dark some places might get. And if they prefer a tropical paradise, they don’t think about the problems that come with that. The grass always seems greener on the other side.
Spring breakers want to spend money in Mexico not the U.S. ain’t education grand Moe.
