A convicted felon from Watts has been sentenced to 45 days in jail and 12 months of probation for posting video of himself pouring alcohol into a hawk’s mouth, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said Tuesday.
CDFW officers began investigating after a YouTube video surfaced showing 25-year-old Cesar Gustavo Diaz feeding a BuzzBallz mixed cocktail to the bird. Investigators later determined that Diaz captured the young Cooper’s hawk at Amelia Mayberry Park in Whittier in June 2025.
“Hanging out with the homie,” read one still image from the video, according to the CDFW. “Hawk loves him some buzz ball,” another still stated.

Diaz was ordered to complete 20 days of community labor, attend a 24‑session animal cruelty counseling program, avoid possessing animals for five years, avoid possessing a gun for 10 years, and pay a $220 fine.

He claims to have released the Hawk, but anyone lowlife enough to capture a wild bird and feed it alcohol for a laugh is probably quite capable of lying to the police.
He may have a friend on parole taking care of the bird while he serves his 45 day sentence.
Ridiculous. If he had kidnapped a child to take it to get its genitals removed and “transitioned” he would be hailed as a hero of the democrats. It’s a cooper’s hawk. They aren’t rare or endangered. And animals love getting drunk. This bird gut lucky it had a mixed drink.

How the cops gonna prove that was alcohol? It was colored water, and a joke. What’s your evidence? A video? I saw Luke Skywalker blow up the death star on video too...

If only they cared more about people who are harmed by illegals as much as they care about the hawk.

Seems he was already convicted. Must’ve forgotten the first Miranda right. I was with someone who got arrested about a year ago. Got read his rights and the cop said “with that in mind are you willing to talk to me?”. He looked over at me. I said, “what was the first thing he said to you?”. He looked at me dumbfounded. I said “I’m not telling you what to do but if I got arrested I would exercise my right to remain silent and not answer any questions”.
Took a year, the case was crappy and the judge tossed it. If he had opened his yap he might have a conviction.
And they fly right into our windows. Neighbors have the tree-they want to take it down but are torn between the beautiful flowering aspect of the tree and the menace it becomes when the flowers ferment.
All the alcohol/bird videos I’ve found so far have to do with fermented fruit the birds find in the wild or that ferment in their stomachs from eating overripe berries and such. Would a hawk even be interested in a mixed drink unless it had a scent that would attract it?

A couple of dove seasons ago I shot a mourning dove near a cattle tank. The dove was still fluttering a bit as I walked over to pick it up, but when I was just a few feet away a Cooper’s hawk swooped in, grabbed it, and flew off with it. Two days later and about 50 yards from that spot, I saw the same hawk take a Gambel’s quail out of a covey that was feeding on the ground. Great little predators.
