Gov. JB Pritzker is demanding President Trump refund the state of Illinois more than $8 billion after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down his sweeping reciprocal tariffs Friday.
The court ruled 6-3 that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA, does not authorize the president to impose tariffs.
Now businesses are pressing the Trump administration to issue tariff refunds, and Gov. Pritzker has joined in their call.
In a letter to Mr. Trump that Pritzker shared publicly, he wrote, "Your tariff taxes wreaked havoc on farmers, enraged our allies, and sent grocery prices through the roof. This morning, your hand-picked Supreme Court Justices notified you that they are also unconstitutional.
"On behalf of the people of Illinois, I demand a refund of $1,700 for every family in Illinois. There are 5,105,448 households in my state, bringing the total damages you owe to $8,679,261,600."
"This letter and the attached invoice stand as an official notice that compensation is owed to the people of Illinois, and if you do not comply, we will pursue further action."

Trump’s tariffs were so powerful they caused grocery prices to skyrocket 2 1/2 years before he re-took office!

The refunds would be income to the importers.
Congress can lay in a special income tax fast, or lose billions.
It looks like either the importers or the foreigners paid from 6 to 16 percent of the tariffs. Although Peter Schiff said that would eventually fade away to 100% on the consumer if the tariffs continued. So it is confirmed that tariffs are just a tax on US citizens as you imply.
Illinois is estimated to have around 400,000 undocumented immigrants, making it the sixth largest undocumented population in the United States. So President Trump just needs the State of Illinois to pay $21,700 per illegal to compensate the Federal Government for their support.
Income received from the USCIS via a refund process shall be taxed at 100%. Checks issued for such refunds shall be placed immediately afterward in the cardboard boxes the Commission of the Internal Revenue Service shall provide.
Ouch. Several studies have shown the cost to the average American was >$1,000 in 2025. That might be acceptable, if my income tax would have gone down, but I just got the smallest tax refund in 20+ years this year.
Taxpayers do NOT owe sanctuary states or cities ANY $$$$.
If anything, sanctuary cities owe US taxpayers.

Idiots like Pritzker must not know what a tariff is.
Nobody is forcing consumers to purchase foreign products. They can just as easily purchase American made products (with no tariffs applied). If the consumer wishes to buy the more expensive foreign import, then that’s on them.

Well Pritzker is an idiot, but there has been a lot of misleading info out there. Let's start with the basics. Who pays them? Is it the country of origin, or the country of import? As in, is it a tax on Americans, or a tax on exporters like China?
