Gov. JB Pritzker is demanding President Trump refund the state of Illinois more than $8 billion after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down his sweeping reciprocal tariffs Friday.
The court ruled 6-3 that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA, does not authorize the president to impose tariffs.
Now businesses are pressing the Trump administration to issue tariff refunds, and Gov. Pritzker has joined in their call.
In a letter to Mr. Trump that Pritzker shared publicly, he wrote, "Your tariff taxes wreaked havoc on farmers, enraged our allies, and sent grocery prices through the roof. This morning, your hand-picked Supreme Court Justices notified you that they are also unconstitutional.
"On behalf of the people of Illinois, I demand a refund of $1,700 for every family in Illinois. There are 5,105,448 households in my state, bringing the total damages you owe to $8,679,261,600."
"This letter and the attached invoice stand as an official notice that compensation is owed to the people of Illinois, and if you do not comply, we will pursue further action."

Thank you for your correspondence. In reply, we would ask that you itemize every purchase instance for each individual citizen that qualifies for a refund.
Please also refer to the legislation known as the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, as we believe that your reimbursements have already been remunerated.

The SCOTUS said nothing about refunds. So, no refunds, whale-boy.

Trump will send the bill back to Pritzker with explicit instructions of where to stick it. And a “Thank you for your attention to this matter”.
For the record, I'm strongly in favor of tariffs, but only as a replacement for the income tax, as the founders intended.
Add the per person Illinois debt to the per person for each American based on the national debt, and Illinois is insolvent and living on its credit card. Tick tock.
Fat Bastard is harboring over 500,000 illegals in IL. What percentage of them are on welfare? I’ve read that illegals in Minnesota are costing taxpayers about $50,000 each. I am thinking fathead owes us more than he’s asking.
Why would the state of Illinois be entitled to money? If money were to be refunded, which will not happen, it would be to importers and not state governments.

That's TBD. The USSC did not rule on refunds. The debate now is who is more worthy of the refunds. All we know for sure is it won't be any foreigners, even though we were told they were the ones paying the tariffs.
The importers, who are almost exclusively Americans and paid the taxes, may be reimbursed.
However, consumers who consolidate in class action suits, could make a legal claim that they are more worthy of the refunds, as the importers weren't actually damaged, as they raised their prices to offset the new tax.
Only time will tell. It will probably be a mixture of reimbursements, and it wouldn't be shocking if the final outlays are in total more than the total tax income was originally.

Plus, the Blimp needs to provide an itemized bill detailing all of the fraud that has been paid by the Feds in the Ill State over the last 16 years along with a yuge check to cover same.
As if the governor actually cares about the people of his state, exampled by his allowing so many to be harmed or die by his ineffective and uncaring choices to allow crime by citizens and illegals, on his watch.
