Michelle Obama says affirmative action no different than student athlete admissions

Former first lady Michelle Obama argued that getting accepted into college for being a star athlete is no different than being accepted due to affirmative action policies.

During Wednesday’s episode of Mrs. Obama’s “IMO” podcast, comedian Josh Johnson spoke about his own experience as a young Black comedian and writer and sometimes being the only Black person in the room.

“It is funny because, like, you know, people talk about, like, DEI and some of these initiatives and everything. And the thing that’s always funny to me about the outrage is that y’all already have the number,” Johnson said.

He argued that out of 100 people, eight to 10 might be set aside for minorities or women, and then those positions are a source of outrage.

He went on to argue that, for many people, their belief is that were it not for those seats set aside, they would have gotten in.

“When it was just like 100 White slots, there was like the 101st White guy who couldn’t get in,” Johnson said.

“So, it’s like, ‘You might not be able to beat other White people.'”

“And they probably won’t let you because they will keep changing the rules to keep being at the top,” Mrs. Obama said.

“My first realization of that came when I went to Princeton, right? Because I got, you know, applied, but my counselor said, ‘I don’t know if you’re Princeton material.’ Even though my brother was there, even though I was a top student, it was, like, so it set up this notion that this place is something really special.”

The former first lady then suggested that while one might be insecure about benefiting from affirmative action, getting into college for being an athlete is basically the same thing.

Sorry Michelle! Student athletes contribute to school spirit. “Affirmative action” students do not necessarily do so, especially if they are race activists!

I both know people and know of people who were star athletes and probably could have had quite an athletic career but could not get into the universities recruiting them because they did not meet the academic requirements for admission.

She has no clue what she is talking about.

We can debate this. It really depends on the college. But I’ll grant you that some schools may waive all their academic standards for exceptionally talented atheletes.

But my larger point is, at least they bring something to the table of value. Not just based on their identity alone.

Michelle Obama’s thesis shows that Princeton University is exactly the kind of institution that the board at Princeton pretends it’s not.

She brought athletics into the DEI equation:
SO, from henceforth All Sports Teams Must match the population race percentages.
1. 63 % white
2 15 % Hispanic
3. 13% Black
3. 7% Asian
4. 2% “Other”
.. You Know to be fair...

Disagree. I guess it depends on what you value.

We would be a lot better off as a nation if we prioritized academics over athletics.

If we told these young kids they have to achieve academic success or they’re not going to have an opportunity to play college sports, they might focus on academics more. Instead, so many athletes are pampered all the way though high school and many leave without a good education. They’re unprepared for higher education or the workplace.

We’d be so much better off if academics got very important to them. If it was eligibility to play sports that motivates them, I am fine with that. At least they would be better prepared to succeed in life.

Also, I am sick of the glorification of athletes. There are others that bring far greater value to society that deserve greater recognition.
