Michelle Obama says affirmative action no different than student athlete admissions

Former first lady Michelle Obama argued that getting accepted into college for being a star athlete is no different than being accepted due to affirmative action policies.

During Wednesday’s episode of Mrs. Obama’s “IMO” podcast, comedian Josh Johnson spoke about his own experience as a young Black comedian and writer and sometimes being the only Black person in the room.

“It is funny because, like, you know, people talk about, like, DEI and some of these initiatives and everything. And the thing that’s always funny to me about the outrage is that y’all already have the number,” Johnson said.

He argued that out of 100 people, eight to 10 might be set aside for minorities or women, and then those positions are a source of outrage.

He went on to argue that, for many people, their belief is that were it not for those seats set aside, they would have gotten in.

“When it was just like 100 White slots, there was like the 101st White guy who couldn’t get in,” Johnson said.

“So, it’s like, ‘You might not be able to beat other White people.'”

“And they probably won’t let you because they will keep changing the rules to keep being at the top,” Mrs. Obama said.

“My first realization of that came when I went to Princeton, right? Because I got, you know, applied, but my counselor said, ‘I don’t know if you’re Princeton material.’ Even though my brother was there, even though I was a top student, it was, like, so it set up this notion that this place is something really special.”

The former first lady then suggested that while one might be insecure about benefiting from affirmative action, getting into college for being an athlete is basically the same thing.

Which is the point Mike misses.

Somebody sneaks into college because she can play a sport doesn’t try to come out a neuro-surgeon or the like.

But the DEI slugs being slipped into Princeton under ARE going to try and pass themselves off as qualified professionals.

Most colleges now have affirmative action for men because they get so many more applications from young women.

They want to make sure they don’t fall below the dreaded 40% male line in their student body because then neither young men nor young women are as interested in attending.

She sort of implies that the minority students are there for entertainment or amusement ...

Ironically, she's half-right, though not in the way that she intended.

Both affirmative action/DEI and student athlete admissions often result in pools of students with subpar academic qualifications and abilities. In many cases, both DEI students and student athletes need to take special, remedial education classes in order to get by - including remedial reading/writing classes that are conducted at an elementary school level.

And last but not least, student athlete admits, particularly in big money college sports like basketball at big universities, disproportionately benefit blacks.

Thank goodness for the “not as interested” information. Would love to see more young people getting into fields where there is need.

Right? Athletic scholarships are the exact opposite of Affirmative Action. No doubt The First Wookie was accepted to fill an AA quota.

Uh, there is one big difference. Affirmative Action is based on race. That is not allowed under our Constitution. But Michelle, if you really want to go there, are you OK with colleges giving preference to white students? Excluding blacks based solely on race? I thought a big part of US history was getting to the point where people are not judged based on race.

Athletic scholarships are often, in result, another form of AA/DEI. (Think football and basketball teams, etc.)

Indeed - both disproportionately benefit black and other "minority" students, and both often result in the admission of students who aren't remotely academically qualified for college-level study.

That woman should really quit talking because every time she opens her mouth she proves just how dumb and racist she is.

This actually kind of makes sense.

I’m not sure the conclusion is what she wants.

She and Candace Owens need to resign themselves to the fact that they’ll never be white. Their jealousy rules every fiberr of their being.

Set-asides for those who have not achieved anything are the same as those for outstanding athletes. Right.

Michele is the dace of “la raza” for blacks.

Athlete preferences are also a bad idea, but a DEI airline pilot, brain surgeon, engineer, professor, architect, etc., is more dangerous than a DEI athlete.

It means they let people in who don’t qualify academically for reasons other than academic ability.

In other words she’s calling DEI admits too stupid to get in on their own.

She’s debunking her own narrative without realizing it.

Their numbers are wrong. It is not eight to ten out of a hundred. At Harvard, the class of 2025 had 18% blacks admitted. There was a table here on FR that showed the percent that would have been admitted if it weren’t for DEI and it was less than 1%.
