An avid New Jersey outdoor buff slipped off a trail and froze to death while hiking New York’s highest peak with her dog — after it took rescuers more than six hours to find her in bitter single-digit temperatures, officials said Wednesday.
Brianna Mohr, 21 — who posted breathtaking Instagram photos of herself on remote adventures — called 911 while clinging to the side of Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks at 3 p.m. Thursday, according to police.
But rescuers couldn’t find Mohr, of Brick, until after 9 p.m., at which point she had died of hypothermia, New York State Police said.
Temperatures in Keene, New York, where the mountain is located, ranged from -8 to 20 degrees that day...

“Hiking alone is a huge no no.”
Hiking alone can be a very rewarding experience.
We were on T-Mobile, but had so many problems that we switched back to Verizon a year ago.
My iPhone has good satellite comms (text only) when it is out of range of cell towers. I use GaiaGPS and download maps before I head out to a new place. I also carry a power bank for extended power for the phone. It all works well together.
LOL

We have no problems with T-Mobile,
Works great in Europe, Asia and other places. Free texting and slow internet. Calls 25 cents a minute.
I usually sign up for a 30 day $50 plan for free calls and faster internet. Then my phone becomes a hot spot.
They had to send a local guy up Marcy to tell Teddy Roosevelt that
McKinley was dead.
But that was in September
In the heart of Silicon Valley, I’d say maybe 5% of my calls were trouble-free! Dropped calls, calls not going through, garbled underwater sound. And it wasn’t my phone — all family members suffered it.
Why is it that when I was her age, me and most people I knew at the time had jobs. Seems these younger kids today have time to do all these extreme sports and outdoorsy stuff that we could not or did not do back in the day.
I’m glad the dog is okay.
I don’t even walk 30’ to my car with temps like that.
If I slip and fall and am unconscious I’ll lay there until someone notices me, which might be days.
So I bring in whatever I might need and stay inside
Being alone for 3 years has made me be really careful about things that never used to concern me at all.
I was very active in my 20s. After work and on weekends had me going out of town skiing, sailing, other activities.
I was 32 when I had my first kid, and that’s when things changed.
Darwin Award candidate?
This happens pretty regularly on Mt Washington.
Especially in the summer. You start out and its a nice day. Then you get above the tree line and the weather changes in an instant. Then you can not see 30’.
The issue becomes that the Mountain Rescue still goes out to find your dumb A$$. Any time of day.
More people die of hypothermia on Mt Washington than almost any other mountain in the world outside the Himalayas.
Beautiful young woman, RIP
unfortunately she made a terrible/fatal mistake…

THE SMART ONE SURVIVED
Some ten years ago a Seattle woman who posted a weekly hiking blog in one of the local newspapers died on Mt. Rainier. She was hiking with a male companion, it was snowing and he turned back She kept on and lost her life.
When living on the edge, sometimes the edge wins.
“Influencers” won’t turn around for fear of disappointing their “fans”.
I agree.
