Hollywood icon Robert Duvall has died at the age of 95.

He was best known for playing Tom Hagen opposite Al Pacino and Marlon Brando in The Godfather.

The actor's wife, Luciana, announced the news Monday on Facebook, writing, 'Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.'

She added ... 'To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented.

'In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.'

he San Diego native worked as an actor for seven decades.

Duvall began his career on TV with minor roles in the 1960s on The Defenders, Playhouse 90 and Armstrong Circle Theatre.

He made his feature film acting debut portraying Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962).

Other early roles include Captain Newman, M.D. (1963), Bullitt (1968), True Grit (1969), M*A*S*H (1970), THX 1138 (1971), Joe Kidd (1972), and Tomorrow (1972).

I completely appreciated him as an actor, and from what I knew of him, as a person. I never adored or deified him, and I am sure I speak for many.

I enjoyed him for the roles he played and how he played them. I got an enormous amount of enjoyment from his movies and roles.

But I agree with DennisR’s distaste for the celebrity worship aspect of our culture.

An awesome quote for a sterling role! You know, he was one of those actors who just seemed to own whatever role he played by appearing to simply be himself!

He was phenomenal, but as I recall, I found the movie depressing, IIRC.

Like I said above, not all his movies appealed to me except...for his role in them. I don’t believe I ever saw him play a role he didn’t just pick up and carry.

The sign of a great actor.

As do I. But a memorial thread is hardly the place for his personal gripes.

One gets the distinct impressions I got from him in the way he played his characters, is that he seemed like, if you met him in real life, he would be in many respects the same as one of his characters.

People who have met him personally bear that out in there anecdotes, as you did. I find I am often correct on these gut assessments, which I also have for many people on this forum who I have met in real life...

There are a very few actors I feel that way about, and Robert Duvall is one of them.

I agree. This didn’t seem like that kind of thread to me in any case-it seems like the kind of commentary about his roles and how he played them.

He’s been me and Hub’s favorite actor since Spot was a pup. We’ve seen all his movies and have most of them. RIP Mr. Duval and thanks for the wonderful memories....

Millions like me remember Duval as just “Augustus McRae” or even more simpler..........”Gus”.

It’s my understanding Duval always wanted an opportunity to play Lee. Also I’m told he’s related to Lee through his mother’s family.
