Canada could remove 5 times its annual carbon emissions by planting trees on edge of boreal forest, study finds

Planting trees on 6.4 million hectares of northern taiga forest could remove 3.9 gigatons of CO2 by 2100 — five times Canada's annual emissions.

Canada could remove more than five times its annual carbon emissions from the atmosphere by the end of the century by planting trees along the northern edge of its boreal forest, a new study suggests.

In recent decades forests have slowly moved north in response to climate change — in particular the taiga area on the edge of the boreal forest, the massive belt of forest stretching across northern Canada, Europe, and Russia, where it transitions to Arctic tundra. This movement suggests a potential way to boost carbon sequestration in the area, said study lead author Kevin Dsouza, a postdoctoral researcher in Earth and environmental sciences at the University of Waterloo in Canada.

"What is the potential for reforestation in these regions, and how much carbon could they sequester?" he told Live Science.

In the new study, his team used satellite data to identify forest composition and empty spaces in the northern boreal forest, and ran simulations using models from the forestry industry that included fire probabilities, climate variables, seedling mortality and land type to estimate how much carbon the ecosystem could sequester over the next 75 years.

The simulations identified around 6.4 million hectares (15.8 million acres) of land suitable for reforestation — an area about twice the size of Vancouver Island — across Canada's north. Planting trees on this land would remove almost 4 gigatons of carbon from the atmosphere by 2100, about five times Canada's current annual emissions. But that 6.4 million hectares is a fairly conservative estimate of the available land, Dsouza said. Scaling it up to 32 million hectares (79 million acres) could sequester almost 20 gigatons.

Environ-mental-ists will never go for it. It's not redistributing wealth or shutting down industries, or f@#$ing anyone over. People even like trees. They're pretty and some even bear fruit or provide sap for syrup on pancakes. So what good is it to them. Capitalist pigs!

It’s too sensible of course.

Excess carbon dioxide - if there is such a thing - is not a problem. It’s an opportunity. In time, nature will take the lead. But we can help by getting the process started...

Ok. Carbon sequestration is a real thing. That’s what coal does. Releasing that geologically sequestered carbon is what the carbon neutrality jihad is all about.

Now ... let’s go with the numbers here.

Massive reforestation on the scale projected could, over the next 75 years, remove five times Canada’s annual CO2 output. So in 75 years, Canada could offset it’s 2026 though 2030 emissions. Without denting its 2031-2100 emissions.

If math weren’t so heteronormative and white supremacist, I might try to figure it out. But math is hard. Ask any TikToker. But maybe this doesn’t add up to a plan.

We could probably get larger emissions reductions in the long run by getting environmental zealots, social justice warriors, and politicians to shut up for at least 20 hours a day.

Not sure if anyone on this forum is following the NBA scandal with zillionaire POS Steve Ballmer and a company named Aspiration.

Aspiration was a fraudlent company that sold “carbon credits” for planting trees.

Ballmer owner of the NBA Clippers is accused of using the company to circumvent the salary cap by giving his star player a job which paid 28 million for doing nothing.

Carbon credits for planting trees?

Buying a piece of the Brooklyn Bridge seems like a better deal than that.

Maybe Sideshow Carney should concentrate on THAT, instead of trying to score points by deliberately pissing off the US.

Global warming would be a good thing, especially for Canada. Nobody likes cold weather, except Holstein cows. They give more milk in it. BFD. But trees are good. They provide shade, lumber, sap for syrup, fruit, mulberry trees are good for silk worms, and forests reduce the power of harsh winter winds. So, an NBA owner did a little grift with trees and a star player. The salary cap is stupid, and so are carbon credits. Let freedom ring. Plant a freakin’ tree.

Hey! Those forest fires did some real good in the world. Because of them, the Pacific Pallisades are ruined!

Unless the dead trees (all trees die eventually) are sequestered (buried) they will rot. Their carbon will be released into the atmosphere as mostly methane which will then decay via sunlight into CO2 and H20.

CO2 reduction via forestation is a scam.

Do Tell.

THe Liberal radicals now making Canada suffer would never plant trees.

They are totalitarians who would rather impose high fuel taxes, mandate EVs for farmers, truckers and ordinary citizens, and make the provinces stop drilling for oil or mining for strategic minerals.

HOw?THey use fedral environmental law and 1st nations treaties to do that.

CAnada will not be planting any trees as suggested. They would rather beat the piss out of Canadians and confiscate their guns.

Why do you think that Trump dislikes the liberals of Canada?
The liberal government of Canada removes individual freedoms and is becoming more like China.PDJT will take Carney’s liberals to the wood shed.

For the last three summers unchecked Canadian forest fires have blanketed the northern US with smoke so dense it caused air quality alerts. However, the environmentalists said nothing about the massive amounts of CO2 and carbon particulates dumped into the atmosphere for years. Maybe it’s time for Canada to better manage their forests so they don’t burn year after year

I remember somebody having the “brilliant idea” of building a machine that could “suck the CO2 right out of the air”.

Genius. They’re called trees. If these people were so convinced about CO2 and “net zero” then why don’t we have a global “plant a tree” day?

Imagine 100’s of millions of trees being planted in one day! Think of the CO2 they’re “suck out of the air”!

But no, it’s too obvious, too easy, and doesn’t have any political power.

Steve Ballmer will be 70 years old next month.

What the heck was he thinking?

The NBA will make him sell the team if this is serious.

Then, the IRS and DOJ will show up...

Just what Canada needs: more trees. Liberal/Progressive thinking causes people to write stupid political and social checks the “thinkers” expect others to cash. Socialism works until the socialists run out of other people’s money.
