(NewsNation) — “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie is weighing a permanent exit from the top-rated morning show as the frantic search for her mother, Nancy Guthrie, drags into its third week, sources tell NewsNation’s Paula Froelich.

Savannah Guthrie has been on leave as the FBI and authorities in Pima County, Arizona, pursue investigative leads into Nancy Guthrie’s Feb. 1 disappearance from her Tucson area home. It’s believed the 84-year-old grandmother was taken, and media outlets have received bitcoin ransom demands.

“This absolutely came out of the blue, and I think she’s really concerned that it was because of her job,” Froelich, NewsNation senior story editor, told “NewsNation Prime” on Saturday.

I would expect a right-wing nut job. While the overwhelming majority of the political violence in this country is from the left, there are right-wing nuts out there as well.

I suspect that Savannah did a story on ... something or someone and, given that's she's on NBC, there's a pretty high chance that the story in question was perceived to be a long, long way from fair.

Kidnapping Savannah's mother hurts Savannah a lot more than if he/they hurt Savannah directly.

I’m rather confused why this kidnapping/murder is far more important than the hundreds of others that occur in the USA yearly.

She's a popular newscaster that many know and recognize. Daniel Riffe once said that for news coverage, ""One death in the United States equals 5 deaths in Europe, 25 in the Middle East, 100 in Asia, 500 in Latin America, and 5,000 in Africa."

Combine that with a kidnapping or murder, and the lurid element adds interest.

That's why thousands killed in Ukraine is a bigger deal than hundreds of thousands in Rwanda, and Nicole Simpson was bigger than all of it put together.

Savannah Guthrie was touting right wing causes and needed quieting?

Nancy was picked for a reason.

Kidnappers would normally probably prefer to snatch a kid or young woman.

Somebody might have seen Nancy watching the Today Show, seen Savannah come to the house, seen Savannah eating with Nancy at a restaurant, overhead Nancy talking to Savannah over the phone, etc.

I would guess it may have started as a home invasion type thing. She was killed or injured and they removed her to get rid of the body somewhere. This may be some people thinking this is a home of Savannah’s and they were looking for money or riches inside.
