Trucking and logistics stocks drop on release of AI freight scaling tool
CNBC ^ | 02/13/26 | Pua Singh

Shares of several trucking and logistics companies declined Thursday on fears that new artificial intelligence tools could slash major freight inefficiencies, leading to less demand for the industry’s services.

A new tool from AI company Algorhythm Holdings has made trucking companies the latest victim of the market’s AI jitters, adding to the historic sell-off in software stocks and real estate companies. The notable market rotation has come as investors are increasingly scrutinizing traditional businesses that may not be able to keep up with rapid advancements in AI.

Leading trucking and logistics stocks C.H. Robinson and RXO dropped 14.5% and 20.5%, respectively, during Thursday’s session. J.B. Hunt Transportation Services declined about 5%, while XPO lost nearly 6% and logistics company Expeditors International of Washington fell about 13.2%.

There’s an “emerging debate around open-source automation agents such as Molt Bot that offer increased potential to automate routine back-office tasks and help equalize the technology playing field for smaller operators,” said Baird analyst Daniel Moore in a note.

He reiterated his outperform ratings on C.H. Robinson and Expeditors, saying “automation is not a new theme.”

Shares of Algorhythm, a penny stock before Thursday, popped 29.9%, meanwhile.

Is there anything that AI and climate change can’t do?

Not when it comes to being used as an excuse to increase profit margins or increase government grift money.

It’s not just the logistic efficiencies that could be achieved with AI, if we can have driverless cabs hauling people all over a city, why not driverless big rigs hauling freight all over the country.

Algorhythm Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: RIME)

The “Karaoke Pivot”: Historically known as The Singing Machine Company, it rebranded to Algorhythm Holdings in September 2024 to reflect its transition into a pure-play AI technology firm.

Divestitures: In late 2024, the company finalized the $4.5 million sale of its original karaoke business to focus entirely on its AI software portfolio.

These "inefficiencies" are capable of being addressed without any "AI". These "inefficiencies" sound more like poor, maybe even purposeful, mismanagement to increase charges to clients/customers, somebody somewhere profits from these "inefficiencies"...follow the money.

The other money quote is near the end...

"Separately, investors are watching to see how trucking companies could also be impacted by U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy’s Wednesday ruling to prohibit, according to the announcement, “unqualified foreign drivers” from obtaining licenses to drive commercial trucks and buses."

They are losing their cheap, abusable, foreign labor...therefore costs will increase when they have to hire actual qualified US citizens who can read road signs and know how to legally drive on a highway.

AI doesn’t live in the real world and neither do most of the people that program it

A little googling . . .

They are reducing Empty Truck travel time by plugging in more carriage.
It’s what any carrier would do if they could.

Like going one way, unloading, then getting a full load return trip. Efficient instead of going one way then returning empty.

A partial offering to the The Traveling Salesman problem, with a twist.

Did you see the story last week about how Waymo cars are connected to live techs in the Philippines? Yea, we’re ready for driverless rigs.

Maybe for milk runs but not for real rigs. My son runs flatbeds and semi dump trailers. I don’t think he’s ever backed into a loading dock but he can put his rig almost anywhere, and get back out.

Precisely. People are all screaming about affordability and lowering costs. Well, this is just one of the ways.

why not driverless big rigs hauling freight all over the country.

Because road conditions change frequently,,,and where does the AI get informed when the truck goes in a tunnel...not to mention variable "black ice" conditions.

AI may be Artificial but is not Intelligent.

How is it going to drive a big rig with 7 speed manual transmission and high/low gearbox settings,,,?

Spokeshave who was a big rig driver in a previous existence.
