The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) announced in January that beginning this Friday, February 6th, all driver’s license knowledge and skills examinations will be administered exclusively in English.
FLHSMV shared in a press release, “Today, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) announced that, beginning Friday, February 6th, all driver license knowledge and skills examinations will be administered exclusively in English. This change applies to all driver license classifications, including exams administered orally.”
“Previously, knowledge exams for most non-commercial driver license classifications were offered in multiple languages, while Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and Commercial Driver License (CDL) knowledge exams were only available in English and Spanish.”
“Under the updated policy, all driver license knowledge and skills testing will be conducted in English.”
“To implement this change, FLHSMV has updated its driver license testing system statewide. Language translation services will no longer be permitted for knowledge or skills examinations, and any printed exams in languages other than English will be removed for use.”
“FLHSMV remains committed to ensuring safe roadways for all Floridians and visitors by promoting clear communication, understanding of traffic laws, and responsible driving behavior. ”

Why would anything else be considered?
Agree
Good for them. Pisses me off Pennsylvania has their ballots in English and Spanish. But I’m sure that’s the goal.
Ron DeSantis has been one of the greatest governor ever! What he has accomplished in Florida is amazing.
He’d make a great president!
Oh, no, none of these people: Wo sprechen Sie Deutsch?
Feb 20, 2024
In the USA, lots of road signs require basic English knowledge. E.g. You really need to understand what “Speed limit” means to be able to navigate the roads.
So, the English only test is really necessary!
I do not know, why this is not implemented everywhere?!
The whole “X different languages” was totally and absolutely woke and idiotic. I never, ever understood it as anything other than stupidity. My blue state has 26, California has 35.
Idiotic.
I admire Florida for doing this. I think DeSantis is a fine Governor.
Language translation services
___________
In many places, One can bring in his/hers own translator.
That often means, that it is not the applicant, but the “translator” who takes the test!
DUH!!! ALL STATES SHOULD HAVE THIS!!
And "bridge height" , so they don't keep crashing into lower bridges. And maybe train some of these people, somewhere along the way we stopped training people how to drive properly.
Kudos, Florida.
Great state, great governor, great people.
“California has 35.”
Yeah, the Braille test is really over the top... ;<)
If you have tests in English and Spanish then you are discriminating against many, many people, e.g. people who speak German, Russian, Hungarian, French, ...
Assimilation BEGINS with learning the language of the country you plan to live in as far as I’m concerned.
And then you go from there.
People that want to live here and speak their language is a personal insult to me.
A related side note: why have spanish advertisements on TV during an English speaking show?!
When people from other countries come to Florida and want to rent a car, what happens? Do they have to demonstrate English proficiency?
