Minneapolis Refuses To Renew Liquor Licenses For Hotels That House ICE Agents

The Minneapolis City Council, in an 8-5 vote, refused to renew liquor licenses for two hotels accused of housing ICE agents, delaying action to seek greater ‘public input’ in the process. A public hearing for residents to complain about the hotels is scheduled for February 17.

The hotels have been targets of protests because federal immigration officers were believed to be staying there during the immigration enforcement surge that brought 3,000 federal agents to Minnesota, when an agent killed Renee Good.

Even the city’s attorney told the council that (1) the hotels complied with liquor licensing laws, (2) are eligible for renewal, and (3) deny the licenses on the basis of housing federal employees is impermissible and they’d need other grounds.

If there’s any plausible argument, it’s that protestors don’t like the hotels and that the protestors themselves create a dangerous situation where on-premises alcohol could become a problem. Protests broke windows and graffitied the Depot Renaissance, and forced their way into the Canopy through an alley entrance before leaving.

The five council members voting against the delay suggested license renewals shouldn’t be used as a proxy fight over who stays at a hotel, that it’s discriminatory, and creates legal liability. City licensing staff said the hotels can keep serving alcohol in the meantime – the current licenses effectively remain usable pending final council action.

It’s ok if these hotels allow illegal aliens to stay there but not federal law enforcement officers.. Yeah, that makes sense.

On almost every article I read these days, I have to double-check to see if it is a Babylon Bee article.

As Elon Musk said a year or two ago, “Things are getting weird, and they’re getting weird fast.”

As is always the case, licensure was never about the license, but about control and money.

I see an industry for out of State lawyers taking the Minnesota bar exam and donating funds to Minnesotans either running for or maintaining their judgeships'. Plenty of money to be had via the Supremacy Clause for starters.

The spite in their faces must be palpable. I honestly cannot imagine what it must be like to have that kind of darkness in a person.

A liquor license granted or its refusal can be life or death for a hotel or restaurant. I have seen local news stories of closures along with “their long awaited liquor license did not come through.” Approximately 30% of the revenue comes from liquor in the average restaurant.

I think liquor licenses are still granted or refused based on bribe money to officials.

I am serious.

One case out of many.

Former Prince George’s County Liquor Board Official Sentenced To Five Years In Prison For Conspiracy, Bribery, And Obstruction Of Justice.

Greenbelt, Maryland – United States District Judge Paula Xinis sentenced former Prince George’s County Liquor Board official David Dae Sok Son, age 41, of Bowie, Maryland, to five years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release for conspiracy, bribery, and obstruction of justice, in a scheme involving alcoholic beverage licenses in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The defendant also was ordered to forfeit $86,000.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur; Special Agent in Charge Gordon B. Johnson of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Baltimore Field Office;
As described in the plea agreement and other court documents, Son solicited and facilitated bribes from lobbyists and business owners, including co-conspirators Young Jung Paig and Shin Ja Lee. The bribe recipients were elected state officials, including then-County Councilman and Delegate....
