A "Star Trek" actress says conservative backlash is pushing the franchise to lean harder into what she calls its "super woke" identity. Among the critics is White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, who has accused the franchise of abandoning its core audience.
Gina Yashere, who plays Lura Thok in the new Paramount+ series "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy," responded online after sharing a clip from comedian Bill Maher’s show that touched on the controversy.
"All of the hatred coming at us is from fragile, angry White men, talking about either our non-whiteness or our bodies," Yashere wrote Sunday in an Instagram post.

Good point about the USS Enterprise. That reference is probably over the heads of most of the younger viewers in the U.S., and entirely lost for the international audience.
The show needs to shift to something that has meaning across all countries and for all time stretching forward to eternity.
They’ll probably go to USS George Floyd.
They would rather LOSE MONEY and run their networks straight into the ground catering to a small slice of the Far Left audience which is less than half the country and no adult in charge ever stops them or even tries to make money. Weird.
The writers ignore how Jem’Hadar were genetically engineered, sterile and born in hatcheries.
That’s even the most anti-thetical thig, but the most egreious.
I’d posit even the extreme liberal of “Star Trek”, Gene Roddenberry would be appalled at today’s version.
Gene was a conservative by today’s standards - all merit, not quota.

My point of entry with the movie ping list was the culture war question. We’ve lost before we start if we tell young people to stick with stuff that was made before they were born, and often before their parents were born. We have to give them something better than Woke Hollywood and TikTok.
And while I’ve aged out of date nights and my daughters are grown, I do like to get out of the house from time to time and watch something on the big screen.
By the way ... since you like John Wayne movies, have you seen the Coen brothers remake of True Grit (2010)? It’s one of those rare instances in which a remake is definitively better than the original, and with a very different flavor that is stunningly original. It walks the drama-comedy tightrope as well as it has ever been walked. Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn makes John Wayne look like an amateur. But Hailee Steinfeld — then a 14 year old actress playing a 14 year old Maddie Ross — completely steals the show. Watch it if you haven’t seen it.
