Every well digger knows his ass from his elbow and his ass from a hole in the ground, because their job requires them to use a shovel and a bucket to dig down deep into the earth to create a well.

The "brass monkey" is a triangular frame used as a base to stack iron cannon balls. Brass contracts more in the cold than iron. When it is very cold, the brass contracts to the point that the iron balls are pushed out of the frame.
