I played that as a background. It works.

I think the rocks bombarding the camera are called “a’a”.

A’a is fast cooled lava rock - very porous and razor sharp stuff.

We called the slow cooled lava “blue rock”. Not sure of the Hawai’ian name. Very hard stuff.

Whatever the name, it will probably be all vowels.

Close, but not the same. Both basalt though.

Here is the breakdown of the difference:
Pāhoehoe is a type of lava flow characterized by its smooth, billowy, or ropy surface. It is a description of the texture of the solidified lava, which is usually basaltic.
Blue Rock is a term used in the construction industry for a specific, high-quality type of dense, hard, bluish-gray basalt used for roadbeds, concrete aggregate, and rock walls.
The Connection: While some “blue rock” can come from the glassy, dense interior of certain pāhoehoe flows, the term generally refers to the functional quality (density/strength) of the rock for building, rather than just the texture.
Key Differences:
Appearance: Pāhoehoe is defined by its ropy surface. Blue rock is defined by its color and density, often appearing in broken or cut, angular pieces for construction.
Usage: Pāhoehoe is a geological term for a type of flow. Blue rock is a commercial term for high-grade aggregate material.
Weathering: While some fresh pāhoehoe can have a shiny or blue-glassy appearance (especially at the base of tumuli), this color often weathers to a duller black or rusty brown over time.
In summary, blue rock is a subset of dense basaltic lava (which can include pāhoehoe) specifically favored for construction due to its strength
