Frank ‘Home Run’ Baker: Not Just His Nickname Was Interesting

Frank Baker started in major league baseball as one of those raw country lads so endearing to sports writers of his era, and retired a gentleman farmer. Born on a farm just south of Trappe, Maryland, which had been in the family since before the Revolution, he began to play baseball with his brother Norman and the other children of the area before starring for the Trappe High School team. Until then, few saw him as anything more than another farmer’s son.

I am not sure how many times I have passed through Trappe, but ii is a lot as that’s how we got to Ocean City. Never knew it was an actual town.

Back in the day, the eastern shore was considered difficult to farm so the Catholics ceded it mostly to the Quakers.

I am not sure I follow. Was it difficult for Quakers to farm?

His single season home run record was 12. The fans would throw the balls back if they went in the stands, so they were beat up and hard to hit far.

Maryland was founded as a Catholic colony. The eastern shore has poor soil and is more subject to storms like hurricanes, so the Catholics were willing to let the Quakers settle what was then the less desirable part of the colony.
