Nick Reiner smiled eerily in court today as his high-profile criminal defense lawyer sensationally removed himself from the case.
The dramatic departure suggests the Reiner family is pulling financial support from Nick's legal battle after the shocking murders of their parents.
Nick, 32, appeared behind a glass screen in brown jail garb with a shaved head, staring blankly through proceedings and occasionally letting out a chilling grin and looked directly into the packed Downtown LA courtroom.
He was scheduled to be arraigned on two counts of first-degree murder at Los Angeles Superior Court's Stanley Mosk Courthouse and was widely expected to enter a not guilty plea by reason of insanity.
But his defense attorney, Alan Jackson - whose famous former clients list includes Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey - stunned observers by announcing his withdrawal.
At a press conference after Wednesday's hearing, Jackson said, 'Circumstances beyond our control ... and beyond Nick's control have dictated that sadly, it has made it impossible for us to continue our representation of Nick.'
Jackson's departure means Nick will be represented by a public defender...
Judge Theresa McGonigle has rescheduled the arraignment for February 23 and assigned Nick's case to Kimberly Greene, a lawyer in the public defender's office.
A source told the New York Times that Jackson's departure had nothing to do with his performance.
Jackson was hired almost immediately after Nick's arrest last month after being recommended by lawyers for the Reiner family.
After meeting with the judge in her chambers, Jackson told the courtroom this morning, 'We feel we have no choice' in withdrawing from the case - offering no further explanation.

'What we’ve learned - and you can take this to the bank - is that pursuant to the law of this state, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder. Print that! We wish him the very best moving forward.'
No bucks. No F. Lee Baily.
Yeah. The circumstances are that I'm not going to get paid my seven-figure fee I'm sure as Hell not representing this lunatic pro bono.
Yes!
Definitely related to money.
The cost of the defense for Nick Reiner by Jackson would have run into Millions of dollars and I imagine his siblings were not going to pay for that. The trauma alone of his sister is more than anyone should have to bear. So he gets a PD and they probably gave him the best they had. This may stretch out for years.
Hypothesis: Alan Jackson has discovered that no one is willing to pay him. Nick Reiner has likely has no money nor any access to money. And the other Reiner kids are cutting loose the sibling who killed Mom & Pop. Despite the publicity, Jackson ain’t taking on this loser case pro bono.
Can’t pay yo’ bills.
I suspect that Reiner cut off his son from any more money to stop subsidizing his drug lifestyle. That was the core cause as to why Nick killed them.
Hollyweird wants Reiner to cop a plea in order to avoid a trial.
If he’s stuck with a public defender, he’ll be more likely to do that.
Hollyweird is playing hardball with the Reiners.
Yep, that would be my guess as well.
I went to my brother to ask for a loan ‘cause I was busted
I hate to beg like a dog without his bone, but I’m busted
My brother said there ain’t a thing I can do
And mine.
Nick went around at Conan O’Brien’s party asking celebrities if they are famous and causing a disturbance. Nick obviously had a problem knowing that even though he had a famous parent, he himself had no fame of his own. Now through his own actions he has achieved infamy. Maybe his disturbed, warped mind thought the murders could bring him a level of fame that he’s been deprived of?
“ pursuant to the law of this state, Nick Reiner is not guilty”
Meaning insanity defense.
Must have been some darn good drugs he was on. Wonder how his detox in a cell is going.
A guilty verdict of murder requires a high threshold of proof. The prosecutor will have to show proof of pre-meditated malice. If Nick does have a history of schizophrenia, he will be found not guilty due to insanity, especially if it’s a woke liberal jury.
Yes, I know, the "FR Everybody MUST get STONED ASSociation" get their fluffy little tails in a bunch over anyone pointing out the fact that regular consumption of intoxicants is bad for you.
Reality don't care.
Clearly the guy's a nutbar. But was he a lucid nutbar at the time...?
Crazy as a bed bug!
