Trump wants to 'immediately' restrict corporate landlords from snapping up more homes

President Donald Trump wants to bar major investors from purchasing homes, as a housing shortage pushes home prices further out of reach for many Americans.

"I am immediately taking steps to ban large institutional investors from buying more single-family homes, and I will be calling on Congress to codify it," Trump said in a social media post. "People live in homes, not corporations."

He said he would further elaborate on the proposal at a speech in Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum, the annual gathering of chief executives, foreign leaders, and ultra-wealthy figures. No details were provided on how the ban would work and when it would kick in.

The better idea would be actually deporting 10s of millions of illegals—as he campaigned on.

the solution is for cities to let builders build more homes, not to destroy the value of nearly everyone’s greatest asset.

And don’t forget the AIRBNB buyers. My brother lives out at the Oregon coast and anything within 1/2 from the ocean is owned by the same couple corporations who bought everything.

I’m not much a fan of government dictating the market but this is bordering on monopoly practices

Sounds like a bogus political issue to me.

2.5 million non-citizens have been exported, or voluntarily left, the USA, since January 2025.

And - now - we have a home shortage?

Without the Corporate Landlords, we would have a housing surplus - and - collapsing home prices.

Empty homes - like empty apartments - are 24-7 cash consumers.

What possible motive would Corporate Landlords have for not renting, or not selling, empty houses?

valid point - but on the other end of the spectrum, there's a generation of renters, who want to be homeowners, who would love to see collapsing prices.

Trump seems to want to cater to that group.

I think that corporate acquisition of a significant share of housing has vastly more inflationary potential on housing than H1B visa holders. I like this idea of limiting their real estate holdings.
