Current political dynamics around fuel tax reductions (California, early 2026)

1) Republican push: cut/suspend fuel taxes and “hidden” regulatory costs

2) Democratic/administration posture: don’t cut fuel taxes; manage markets + pursue climate policy

3) Ballot-initiative angle: little active traction right now

4) “Replacement” revenue ideas: shift away from per-gallon taxes

Bottom line

Momentum for fuel-tax reductions in Sacramento is currently weak: Republicans keep pushing for cuts or suspensions, but Democrats (who control the Legislature) have largely declined to reduce fuel taxes, prioritizing climate and market-oversight approaches instead. The initiative route is not showing a major, qualified fuel-tax-cut measure at this moment, and much of the “relief” debate has shifted toward regulatory cost drivers and longer-term replacement funding models rather than straightforward tax rollback.

And the political dynamic that is most influential right now is California voter/taxpayers using their feed to run away from the mess that is Sacramento and NewScum in particular. The runaways will cause a reduction of the the consumption of petroleum in the state.

I'm in northern Nevada, so I'm weighing what I can do to minimize the pain level in fuel prices.

Not enough outbound to make a dent in a reduction of refining capacity estimated to be approximately 21% of the total state oil.

UC Davis says expect prices to raise approx $1.21 a gallon.

I am expecting 7 dollars a gallon gasoline by this time next year. Presently it’s sitting at 3.69 in west San Jose CA.

During the bidenflation Diesel was near $8 up the 395 corridor from Mojave all the way to Gardnerville. The only reprieve you’ll find is the Vons in Bishop. I see $10 for Diesel once the refineries close up.

"UC Davis says expect prices to raise approx $1.21 a gallon"

Leftist Institution that has no issues with half truths and lies, so expect more than $1.21

They are going to be in a world of hurt

The Valero refinery is calling it quits

Selling off the refinery, storge tanks and pipelines for scrap.
