Miami pulls biggest upset in College Football Playoff history with 24-14 win over Ohio State

More than 20 years after it was on the other end of one of the biggest upsets in BCS history, Miami pulled off the biggest upset of the College Football Playoff era on New Year’s Eve.

The No. 10 Hurricanes beat No. 2 Ohio State 24-14 in the Cotton Bowl to advance to the semifinal round of the playoff. Miami was a 9.5-point underdog at kickoff. Before Wednesday night, the biggest upset in playoff history — in either the four-team playoff or the current 12-team format — was Ohio State’s win over Alabama as a 7.5-point underdog on Jan. 1, 2015.

After Ohio State’s offense showed signs of life in the second half, Miami put the Buckeyes away much like they did Texas A&M — with a power run game. The Hurricanes gave the ball to Mark Fletcher and CharMar Brown five times over the course of six plays before a wide receiver screen to CJ Daniels got Miami inside the Ohio State 10-yard line with less than two minutes to go.

Somebody forgot to tell Sayin he only had 2 seconds in the pocket to do something with the ball.

Not bad for redshirt freshman though. Future looks bright for this kid.

Never liked Ryan Day.

Can’t say why exactly.

Could be that beard which makes him a appear as a time traveler.

Hiring Kelly as his OC last year got him a title.

Hiring Petrucha as his DC this year didn’t.

Ohio State definitely had the offensive personnel to win another championship, but not the coaching.

No, they ALWAYS get the situation balanced out. Remember they control 2 things:
1 - if somebody wins, they set the conditions with the spread and performance lines
2 - how much wins, cause they own the odds

Anybody that can control those 2 things and ever lose money, is stupid.

Especially in the age of modern legal sports books. They’ve got so much math on their side, and the people and computers to do it. All you’ve got to do is look at all the “temptations” they advertise. If they’re will to give you $400 worth of “free” bets for placing your first $5 bet, well guess how much they think they’re gonna make on you. And one of them pays off if the team you bet for goes a TD up at any point in the game, which sounds insane, but you gotta know the math works and even if they “lose” millions on that game they’re still making a profit by day’s end.

SEC/B10 Cartel: “Who let these ACC imposters into OUR playoffs??”

ESPN: “Honestly, guys, we TRIED to put in Notre Dame instead of Miami but you just refused.”

Miami? Or the the athletes currently under contract to play for a team of players whose organization is stationed at a facility under the auspices of a financial group close to Miami, florida?

I’m a Longhorns fan and Arch showed what he can do yesterday. They will be formidable next year.

Thank you!
I feel the same about ND.
I’m sorry I didn’t watch the game. I love watching Ohio get humbles.
Off to YouTube to see the highlights.

I’m a Longhorn.

We have been rubbing it both Ou and A&M face about their entry in the playoffs after we beat there butts. Then they lose pathetically in the playoffs, A&M scoring only 3 points.
Yesterday with 15 players out, Arch Manning was awesome.
We beat another arrogant team.
UT had a ton n of momentum by the end of the year, so let’s s get up schedule was way more difficult than the Aggies.
The selection committee is full of crap.

It was a fun game. Arch is maturing & we won with 15 players out. Michigan and not had 3.
He announcers of that game should be tarred and feathered and never call a game again. I hope the go explosive diarrhea thing match their mouths.

LOL- cash grab??? Hate to break it to you- college football has always been about cash, and lots of it...the only difference is today the people responsible for bringing in those huge revenues- players and coaches- are justifiably demanding their fair share and getting it...that and the fact unlike the past where you had one network (ABC) that broadcast two games every Saturday, there are hundreds of ways to watch games line or in replay.

Fans will never stop caring- that’s a foolish statement...

Ohio State should have stuck with the run in the 4th quarter, since they dominated the 3rd with it.

Miami is the most talented team, it just takes time for the talent to gel into a cohesive unit. But clearly Miami is there now, I don’t see anyone beating them.

Miami Vs Georgia for the championship...Beck!

They will play in the Semi-Final if UGA wins today.

Considering that Miami also beat the other team that beat Notre Dame, A&M, it also helps ND’s case.

This is what I do to fix the playoffs.

1 - Scrap the Conference Championship Games, Miami didn’t even have to play in one, who cares about conference championships anymore?

2 - Simply seed the teams 1-12 as currently done. Then the 11 and 12 seeds have to play a ‘play-in’ game against one of the two best G5 teams, in essence expanding the field to 14 teams. Had it been done this year, then Notre Dame and BYU would have played JMU and Tulane, respectively.

The only team left that can come close to Miami in the trenches is Georgia..

Beck is Miami’s achilles heel, and certainly UGA probably would have some insight as to how to get to him. They are the one team that could beat Miami for that very reason.
