Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has been trying for years now to get more regulations around name, image and likeness (NIL) deals in college sports, saying back in 2023 that the landscape was "in peril."
….
The post pointed out that the Iowa State Cyclones, who just lost longtime head coach Matt Campbell to the vacant Penn State Nittany Lions job, only has 17 players remaining on their roster for next season. Among those players, only one was a starter.

If the schools take federal government tax dollars, the govt. may have a say so. Colleges are approaching the “somali” scam level. Guaranteeing worthless degrees, paying for athletes to make money for the colleges, all with federal money. The “cheating” aspect is there.
College football is dead. Who wants to see a bunch of fast quick guys in their shorts?Every team is pretty much the same.

And the NCAA and universities being too greedy to give the players anything like a reasonable stipend. That was a huge part of the problem that led to the judges stepping in.
“Why isn’t a scholarship that covers the cost of a college education considered sufficient payment for athletes anymore?”
Because the market has determined that elite college athletes have a value that exceeds the cost of a scholarship.
…
I can get on board with where you are coming from, however, no tax payer money should go to any of these colleges. Then, the market can decide whatever it wants.
The 1933 Montana State University yearbook noted that the basketball team was bad that year...
How?
The yearbook had a photo of five Butterfinger candy bars with the players names below (from the left...).
It’s one of the most famous college yearbooks ever published.

“portal is perverse”…are you equating it with porn and meth use?
You really need to expand your vocabulary.
“Why is this the business of the federal government? This does not involve tax payer dollars.”
You must be unaware that colleges get billions of dollars of taxpayer money.
“Do collegiate athletes still have to take classes at the colleges they are playing for and earn passing grades?”

Have they ever?
Thank you NCAA for screwing with college sports. You have decimated the whole “student athlete”! It wasn’t enough to give full scholarsships, and and easy ride to a 4 yr degree!
The ONLY aspect of college that is not subsidized by the federal government is football. What is the view of many freepers?—-Lets get the government involved.
LOL - there are some teams that seem to be perennially bad.
NIL and the transfer portal will eventually lead to a group of elite, well moneyed universities ... and then everyone else. The NIL money is a big draw.
At present, the various American governments know that the glue that holds America together is bread and circuses.
College football is a major circus that must be preserved to keep the population in tow.
Preservation involves government remediation and fine tuning to insure satisfactory results.
The Constitution does not mention the presence, nor the necessity, of bread and ciscuses
This.
After 90 posts. (First for you out the gate on this thread).
Which is exactly why a Republicrat Senator is involved. They lost NFL viewers and can't afford to also lose college football viewers.
Some will drop some sports. At the NJCAA level (no sports scholarships offered, no NIL), women's lacrosse stopped being sponsored as a championship sport in 2024 - some schools have club teams. I expect the end is coming for NJCAA men's lacrosse in 5-10 years as there are only 20-21 teams.
Probably see some sports at the NCAA level being dropped with more frequency as time goes on. The money makers (football, basketball) are the priority. As long as schools can steer clear of Title IX violations related to sports, football and basketball will get most of the attention from schools.
If Ted Cruz wants to fix college sportsball, he should do something about legalized sports betting on college sportsball.
Isn’t college supposed to be preparing students for their future? What’s better preparation for the future than GETTING PAID? What’s better than learning not to be slaves? Seeking better opportunities? Taking charge of their own life?
And you are saying when ever there is a perceived problem the federal government needs to get involved? I couldn’t disagree more.
The precedent is Teddy Roosevelt and college football. He threatened to outlaw it unless they reformed their rules.
lol
It will destroy competitiveness for all but top 20% of tv draw and market teams
Some teams simply get depleted of key players
The issue with coach poaching exists too
But since you can fire mid season you can hire as well
Lane Kiffin should have waited but maybe he thought his $$$ had peaked this season
If ole miss wins somehow he’ll be sick
Good he’s a jerk but obviously quite a coach
