I have a five year old grandson who seems to have very much enjoyed the movie "White Christmas" with Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby a couple of days ago.
I would like to put together a list of age appropriate classic movies to recommend for a weekly afternoon movie with grandpa.
Keep in mind he is only 5 and as yet not polluted with the "common" culture or exposed to a public school. He lives with a stay at home mom and a working dad and goes to a private school. He and his two younger sisters are much loved and cared for.
His screen time (TV or moms phone) is vert limited and only allowed with mom's or dad's permission. We only have a limited time to lay the groundwork to create a strong and stable character so it's important right now to be able to control what he is exposed to. Lord knows the dam will break one day and he will be flooded with the sh*t that is so pervasive now. Hopefully he will be able to navigate it all.
Below are a few of what I would like to have him discover with me.
What others would the Freeper Universe suggest?
Alice In Wonderland 1951
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves 1937
A Charlie Brown Christmas 1965
Blackbeards Ghost 1968
Holiday Inn 1942
Journey to the Center of the Earth 1959
Lilies of the Field 1962
Mysterious Island 1961
On the Town 1949
Spaced Invaders 1990
Swiss Family Robinson 1960
The Court Jester 1956
Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation 1962

Maybe in a couple more years I am David.
Babes in Toyland, with Laurel and Hardy.
-PJ
Little Rascals and Our Gang.
“How Green was my Valley,” “Captains Courageous,” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”
Warner Bros Cartoons.
Movies are too long for a five year old attention span.
Anything with Don Knotts in it. All the old Disney stuff. Almost anything with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. All of the Herbie the Love Bug movies.
Hans Christian Andersen with Danny Kaye. It has very good music.
OLD Disney movies if you can find them. Like Swiss Family Robinson and Son of Flubber.I think I saw those at about that age. Treasure Island when he is a bit older.
Peter Pan with Mary Martin was good back in the day.
Fairy Tale: a true story
Sorry, missed Swiss Family Robinson on your list.
I would heartily suggest "Tom Thumb" with Russ Tamblyn (and a great ensemble cast). Definitely fun and fit for a five year old and his grandpa. It even features some George Pal Claymation.
Overall you put together a great list! Even for grownups like me!
I was a fan of “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” when I was only a little older than your Grandson. It’s a good movie.
Another 50s Disney classic is “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.”
Kirk Douglas, who was in that movie, lived to 103 (died in 2020).
Vintage Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck cartoons - my grandkids loved ‘em. Like HILLBILLY HARE and WHAT’S OPERA DOC.
Shirley Temple flicks.
Old yeller is VERY sad although ultimately uplifting. Not for all five year olds.
Castaways (live Disney) and Davy Crocket (live Disney). Seven Brides For Seven Brothers musical. Bambi. Cinderella — actually my sons loved it — plenty of good stuff with cats, mice, and dwarves. Disney’s animated Robin Hood is terrific. Little Mermaid too as far as I’m concerned. Great music. Aristocats.
Disney used to be so good. The animated Peter Pan, too.
Thanks everybody!
When I was five I had never seen a TV or a movie, your list seems pretty good with the very old Disney animated films.
