An Alameda man accused of killing a wild turkey this month is facing felony animal cruelty charges, prosecutors said.
The 38-year-old was arrested on Dec. 17 after the illegal hunting was reported to police and animal control by a witness, the East Bay Times reported.
The Alameda County District Attorney's Office is now seeking justice for the wild bird, which are seen around some Bay Area neighborhoods, though they are not native to California.
Police told the East Bay Times that the man, who hasn't been publicly named, shot the turkey with a 177 caliber BB gun near the 400 block of Pensacola Road — about three-and-a-half miles from where the man lives.
The bird was taken to a veterinarian for a full necropsy before the case was brought to the district attorney's office.

I knew someone who shot and ate a turkey on his property and ate it. Said it was okay, but not great.

I’ve never tried to kill a whole Wild Turkey in one sitting. It sounds dangerous.
The non-Drinkable Wild Turkeys in our ‘hood can be a bit aggressive.
Neighbors would likely be aghast with a few sub-sonic 22lrs brought to bring one down.

It got the job done, didn't it.
And I'm surprised that California hasn't banned those .177 cal. silenced assault weapons.
It was probably a pellet rifle. I’m surprised the news article didn’t call it a AR-47.
We had wild turkey every year for Thanksgiving.
Most were taken with 12 gauge #4’s.
I progressed from a cut down 22 single shot bolt then .410 break open to 28 gauge double barrel to 16 gauge auto and finally to a 12 gauge.
Wild anything is very lean. Needs some chicken fat to taste better
Was the guy hungry?
The dreaded AR 177.
Neither is the Delta smelt, yet the Commiefornia government is spending billions to protect a non-endemic fish. Turkeys endemic to California? So what!
The Alameda County District Attorney's Office is now seeking justice for the wild bird...
I was thinking the same thing but, if you started real slow around 10am, you might wake up the next day a bit groggy...
177 kills small game just fine....
Insanity. Felony is insane.
“Police told the East Bay Times that the man, who hasn’t been publicly named, shot the turkey with a 177 caliber BB gun near the 400 block of Pensacola Road — about three-and-a-half miles from where the man lives.” 3.5 miles, he wanted a turkey.
Maybe he was walking his dog, and the turkey went after it.
I remember when turkeys were rare in Ga.
Possession of a single Turkey feather would bring a charge from the game and fish Dept.
Got lots of them now. Turkey hunters know that by the time you see a turkey he is usually looking you in the eye...
There’s obviously no violent crime at all in Oakland if the Alameda DA’s office can spend this much time on an illicit turkey shoot.
