Rob Reiner lived his politics, we can say that much about him at least.
As more time passes, more comes out about how the Reiner household actually ran … a bit like Portland, Oregon; from what I can tell … except, rich … and with at least one highly successful citizen.
The Reiner household had all the much sought-after liberal social programs the blue state governors want most … in a platinum encrusted, limited edition, home version of the game.
Universal Basic Income (check): Nick Reiner got $10,000 a month plus expenses.
Universal Healthcare (check): Nick got 17 trips to rehab. This wasn’t public health style rehab, either, it was private, with intensive, personalized treatment plans, and lots of personal attention.
Unlimited Second Chances (check): 17 visits to rehab. Seventeen chances in a highly structured, expensive facility, not the L.A. County Jail.
Tolerance of escalating drug use (check): Nick went from booze, to weed, to coke, to Herion, to meth … and nobody cut him out of their lives, or kicked him off the Reiner Family Welfare Programs.
Reluctance to utilize police (check): apparently Conan O’Brian was instrumental in keeping concerned guests at his holiday party from calling law enforcement regarding Nick’s distself-helphavior at his party. Had police been called, the Reiners might be alive today. Apparently, police involvement would’ve been too embarrassing for O’Brian … so, ya know, none were called.
A self-help approach to serious mental illness? (sure to come up at trial … so possible check) it seems like Nick should have been institutionalized, whether from drugs alone, or drugs plus serious mental illness, which was left basically untreated. That seems to be a factor in the Reiner saga. Much like Soros judges refusing to incarcerate people who are likely to light other commuters on

After all the years since he played Meathead, I can only remember two roles that Reiner played in front of the camera.
This Is Spinal Tap - Filmmaker of the “movie within the movie”
Wolf of Wall Street - Leonardo DiCaprio’s dad.
Who cares how he lived. He was nothing more than a pain in the back of the lap for thousands during his life and they only wanted him to leave them alone. Now that he is, I don’t care how he was. Be gone...

Every time this comes up around here, everybody's posting like it's 1963.
There are, effectively, no institutions - or, rather, beds are so scarce they might as well not exist.
My state had 6000 involuntary psych beds in 1955. Now, there are 135, and in a great "breakthrough, exciting step forward" 20 more - TWENTY - were approved in 2018, and are still hung up in litigation.
Kicking your kid out is heartbreaking - I have a friend who had to do it - but when you do it, it is more likely a death sentence from overdose or freezing to death in the winter.
People didn't like what a 6000 bed psych hospital looked like, or smelled like, and they didn't like the people who fed, clothed, and cleaned up the inmates either, for minimum wage or in some cases below minimum wage payments.
The cost of fitting out sufficient placements for people like this kid, and presuming laws get changed to get them off the streets and to allow basic custodial care, is many hundreds of billions of dollars. The cost of letting them roam around slitting blonde girl's throats or dousing young women with gasoline and setting them on fire is also high.
Figure out what you want that doesn't involve unicorns who poop Skittles and ice cream.
Sheesh.
1/100 would be a blessing.
More like 1/10,000.
True. But a better use of taxpayer funds than having the funds stolen by Somalians.
Nick seems to be completely irresponsible.........no self awareness at all..............
I’ve seen schizophrenia up close & personal. When in that condition there is no such thing as self-awareness or control. They act out whatever melodrama is in their heads, usually violently. Such people really should be institutionalized. They are a menace to everyone around them.
Great analysis!
I believe he brought a lot of himself to the role. I felt sorry for Archie being lectured by that doofus. If doofus was so outraged by Archie’s attitudes, he shoulda got a job and stopped sponging off of someone he despised!
17 trips to rehab = untreated? Avoid that rehab facility at all costs!
I caught the “herion”. SMH
Good points.

Many decades ago I did volunteer work at such a place.

The vast majority of the patients/inmates belonged there. The people who worked there had a steady (if difficult) job to do and they did it adequately for the most part. It was not a pleasant place but the alternatives (as we have learned) are worse.

That total lack of self awareness is actually a symptom of severe mental illness.
Reiner was in an episode of a show called, something like Hey Landlord. Two broke dudes always in need of money. Hooper from JAWs was in it as well. It seemed early sixties amusing.

Drew Barrymore and Robert Downey Jr went through similar experiences, train wrecks no one would hire, got straight, earned their way back, Downey after several years in big boy prison.
The other two Reiner kids seem to be ok.
I agree. Now, don't get me wrong. The Reiners were despicable people and I doubt they were very good parents, but I have known couples very well who were excellent parents, but one of their children was basically evil from the moment of birth.
Apparently, Nick Lopez hadn’t heard that Nick Reiner had a schizophrenia diagnosis.
It hadn’t occurred to me that we haven’t heard about the funerals of the Reiners. Surprising.
