An Oklahoma man who was doing target practice with a recently purchased handgun in his backyard on Christmas Day is accused of shooting and killing a woman seated on a front porch blocks away as she held a child in her arms, authorities said.
The woman, identified as Sandra Phelps, was sitting with family members under a covered front porch at a home in Comanche, about 90 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, on Thursday afternoon when she was struck in her right arm by what appeared to be a single bullet, an affidavit said. Phelps was holding a child in her left arm while seated on a love seat.
The family members told investigators they heard five to seven shots "over several minutes" coming from somewhere north of the home, the affidavit said. Phelps remarked that someone nearby must have gotten "a new gun for Christmas," according to the filing. Shortly after, she said "'ouch' and collapsed." No additional gunshots were heard.

"Investigators noticed a small piece of ceramic tile in front of the can that Adams said he had been shooting at. The tile appeared to have been hit and broken by one or more bullets...Investigators told Adams that while he was shooting in his backyard, there was nothing behind his property to stop any bullets from traveling beyond his property and hurting someone."
Rules of Gun Safety
1. Never let the government take away your guns.
2. All guns are always loaded.
3. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
4. Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
5. Identify your target (and what is behind it).
I suspect he violated rule 5: Identify your target AND what is behind it.
I also suspect it was a ricochet off the ceramic tile.
This is a preventable tragedy with proper firearms education and training.
How sad for this grandma and her family.
Thank God the child she was holding wasn’t injured, or, also killed.

A law enforcement officer on the news on the radio said not to shoot weapons into the air to celebrate New Year’s Eve because “what goes up must come down.”
That was before this story.
During the first days of the July, 1967 Detroit Riots (I was there) there were stories of gun incidents in neighborhoods that later turned out to be only the very long reach of large rounds from a distance that finally ran out of power and dropped somewhere. A lot of 45 degree angle shooting or shots into the air that missed people on upper floors of buildings made distant neighbors believe a closeby shooter was on the loose.
