Location and preparation are everything.
We spent the 1993 blizzard in NJ. We got a LOT of snow. We stocked up before the storm hit, spent that Saturday indoors, and dug out on Sunday.
In contrast, the blizzards of 1978 and 1996 were way worse in PA.
The worst storm of my life was the Wisconsin Ice Storm in 1976. We were without electricity for a week, and everything was coated in ice - you had to crawl on hands and knees to get across the street to check on neighbors, play with our friends, etc.
But the WORST PART? I was a 16 year old girl with NO TELEPHONE for a WEEK!
I nearly died, LOL!
It was quite the adventure. Dad set up a tent in the living room and we all slept in there (the dog, too!) for body heat. As things were starting to thaw in the freezer, Dad fired up the grill and cooked as much as he could that way. Mom was good at keeping us stocked with all kinds of non-perishables, so we were fine on food. We melted snow for water and used a bucket toilet on the private deck.
Very ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ actually. ;)
