Amazon Apologizes After Delivery Driver Drops Off Package, Allegedly Steals Homeowner’s Cat

Amazon has apologized after a third-party delivery driver was caught on home security video allegedly stealing a family’s cat in a Los Angeles suburb earlier this month.

The incident happened Dec. 11 in Lakewood, according to a report from KTLA-TV.

Diane Huff-Medina shared video footage showing an Amazon Flex worker delivering a package to her home.

The man was seen placing the package at the front door and taking a photo to confirm delivery.

Moments later, the family’s cat, Piper, approached the delivery driver. Piper, a Siamese mix, appeared friendly as the man crouched down to pet her.

According to the video, the delivery driver then picked up the cat by the scruff of her neck.

He was seen carrying Piper to his vehicle before driving away.

Huff-Medina told KTLA that Piper has lived with her and her three sons for six years.

She said the cat is microchipped but was not wearing a collar at the time of the incident. Huff-Medina did not realize Piper was gone until the next day.

The woman only discovered what happened after reviewing footage from her Ring doorbell camera.

Amazon responded to the incident in a statement provided to KTLA.

“This was a horrible act, and we’ve apologized to Ms. Huff-Medina,” Amazon spokesman Louie Tran said.

Tran added that the Amazon Flex delivery partner involved is no longer eligible to deliver to customers.

Authorities confirmed the driver has been identified and that charges are pending.

Tran said Amazon is working with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department during the investigation.

Huff-Medina said the situation has been especially difficult for her children.

She told KTLA that their father died a few years ago, making the loss even more painful.

“It’s a helpless feeling because we watched her get taken, so I don’t know where she is or if she’s OK,” Huff-Medina said.

She added that her children repeatedly ask if Piper has come home.

Huff-Medina shared the video of the driver on Facebook to ask her community for help.

Diane Huff Medina December 14 at 3:46 PM · UPDATE 12/18: Amazon and law enforcement know who he is. Charges are being filed. I have not been successful in speaking with anyone at Amazon who can give me information. We do not have Piper back. I am hopeful we can still find her. An Amazon delivery person took our cat, Piper, after he dropped off a package on Thursday evening. We just want her back home safely. We are working with Amazon and local law enforcement, but haven’t had much support in getting help from either one Amazon has identified the driver but has not been able to get ahold of them. If anyone has any tips on what we can do, let us know! Feel free to share. Thank you! ABC7 Amazon.com Amazon Prime KTLA 5 News

“Legally, if the cat was off the “owner’s” property, it is stray”

If the feline was within view of the front door camera then the odds of it being on the homeowner's property are high. IJS

All I can say is that cats go where they please. Personally, I don't view a cat stepping off the
property as a "stray". That's what cats do. Dogs generally know better (but not much better …).

Poor Peanut. New York State won't execute serial killers, rapists, or murderers.

They only execute people's pets and oldsters in nursing homes. That's a realy effed up state.

It’s relevant if they’re suggesting the driver will be charged with theft.

Black dogs disappeared all the time from yards in Maui when we lived there.

Same here around Halloween.

I kept mine locked down from September to November.

Lost dogs ads during that time were heartbreaking.

What do you tell the owners?

Shelters even had a “ no black pet adoptions” for years because of it.

I had a friend who worked at a PA shelter and every year they had to go to that
“ one place” to retrieve the bodies.

One time there was actually a horse.

Evil is real.

Outside cats often disappear for a day or 2. They’re hunting and/or mating. They come back if hungry or cold or if they’ve been in a fight and want to be in a safe place. This isn’t unusual.

For black cats it’s Satanic rural.

For black dogs in Hawaii, it’s for “black dog adobo”. (Maybe Satanic ritual also, but I’m not sure about that.)

If someone has an outside cat that is what happens and they have a right to have an outside cat and an expectation that it should be safe.

You have obviously never had a cat.

“It’s relevant if they’re suggesting the driver will be charged with theft.”

It is not relevant since the video clearly shows the cat was ON their property when it was taken.

We have such a terrible coyote problem in So Cal lately that ALL cats should be kept inside.

Stealing someone’s pet is despicable.

If I remember correctly, you live in Illinois like I do. There are many new arrivals in the state that don't know how to report roaming animals and instead decide to keep them for themselves by offering food and water. I've seen it. An asian student in my apartment building put up lost cat fliers some years ago. A day or 2 later I spotted the cat in an apartment building window directly across from mine. He got his cat back..

“People with cats they let outdoors in urban neighborhoods do not deserve to be cat owners.”

People who let cats outside in ANY neighborhood should not be cat owners.

I can believe that....one chewed my husband’s little finger nearly in two in the ‘70’s.....his mistake trying to break up a cat fight with his mother’s cat...he had to have stitches...he grew up with his mother’s cats and complained that she thought more of her cats than she did her kids - they were allowed on her furniture, kids weren’t...

ODDLY in 2008, our daughter’s cat bit him and he ended up in surgery and in the hospital for two days...never heard of such a thing but learned...they said it was “common” and we caught it in time before much damage was done...He remained friends with the cat!!!!!
