Amazon Apologizes After Delivery Driver Drops Off Package, Allegedly Steals Homeowner’s Cat

Amazon has apologized after a third-party delivery driver was caught on home security video allegedly stealing a family’s cat in a Los Angeles suburb earlier this month.

The incident happened Dec. 11 in Lakewood, according to a report from KTLA-TV.

Diane Huff-Medina shared video footage showing an Amazon Flex worker delivering a package to her home.

The man was seen placing the package at the front door and taking a photo to confirm delivery.

Moments later, the family’s cat, Piper, approached the delivery driver. Piper, a Siamese mix, appeared friendly as the man crouched down to pet her.

According to the video, the delivery driver then picked up the cat by the scruff of her neck.

He was seen carrying Piper to his vehicle before driving away.

Huff-Medina told KTLA that Piper has lived with her and her three sons for six years.

She said the cat is microchipped but was not wearing a collar at the time of the incident. Huff-Medina did not realize Piper was gone until the next day.

The woman only discovered what happened after reviewing footage from her Ring doorbell camera.

Amazon responded to the incident in a statement provided to KTLA.

“This was a horrible act, and we’ve apologized to Ms. Huff-Medina,” Amazon spokesman Louie Tran said.

Tran added that the Amazon Flex delivery partner involved is no longer eligible to deliver to customers.

Authorities confirmed the driver has been identified and that charges are pending.

Tran said Amazon is working with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department during the investigation.

Huff-Medina said the situation has been especially difficult for her children.

She told KTLA that their father died a few years ago, making the loss even more painful.

“It’s a helpless feeling because we watched her get taken, so I don’t know where she is or if she’s OK,” Huff-Medina said.

She added that her children repeatedly ask if Piper has come home.

Huff-Medina shared the video of the driver on Facebook to ask her community for help.

Diane Huff Medina December 14 at 3:46 PM · UPDATE 12/18: Amazon and law enforcement know who he is. Charges are being filed. I have not been successful in speaking with anyone at Amazon who can give me information. We do not have Piper back. I am hopeful we can still find her. An Amazon delivery person took our cat, Piper, after he dropped off a package on Thursday evening. We just want her back home safely. We are working with Amazon and local law enforcement, but haven’t had much support in getting help from either one Amazon has identified the driver but has not been able to get ahold of them. If anyone has any tips on what we can do, let us know! Feel free to share. Thank you! ABC7 Amazon.com Amazon Prime KTLA 5 News

Maybe the driver thought the cat was homeless, no collar. Secondly, the owner didn't even realize the cat was gone until the next day. Why not?? Don't people keep track of their pets?

IF YOU LEAVE YOUR PET CAT OUTDOORS, EXPECT IT TO DISAPPEAR EVENTUALLY. People with cats they let outdoors in urban neighborhoods do not deserve to be cat owners.

Some cats, especially males, even altered ones, go "off" for a couple of days, "getting take out", claiming territory, etc. Cats rarely have collars these days as almost all the collars sold are the tear away kind, which cats are good at getting rid of. Our cats are chipped. If the cat swings in irregularly each family member may have assumed he came in when someone else was around.

We have had good luck getting kitties from Craig's List. The shelters try to make you promise to make the cat 100% indoors, and some kitties do NOT take to that.

You can't put a price on your pets.

Tell that to the government.

Did they leave it outdoors...?

Many devades ago, one of my cats decided to go through a fiberglass mesh windowscreen.

The screen was down at the time.

He disappeared for a months. Came back when he felt like it.

To be fair to him, we were out of the country at the time and he was being catsat by family.

He may have gone looking for us.

Some cats will find a way.

If the family can’t take the trouble to make it an indoor cat, they’re asking for trouble when they leave it outside.

I realize it’s devastating for them, but you risk a lot if you deliberately leave the cat outside.

“A Siamese? I wouldn’t give a dollar for one....”

I’m 66.
I still have scars from when I was 10
on my leg from a Siamese cat.
Not my favorite either.

This story really makes me mad. We lost one cat in July to disease, and the other one shuck out the door October 22, and we still don’t know his whereabouts.

We had him for 5 years, he was my buddy. I can only hope he’s ok. Maybe someone took him in and is feeding him. He had a collar, and he is chipped. I don’t believe we have any cat eating families in the neighborhood.

Stealing someone’s pet is despicable.
