An Israeli soldier killed himself in a military base in northern Israel, taking the suicide-related death toll to 61 since the beginning of the Gaza war in October 2023, local media said.

According to the Haaretz newspaper, a soldier serving compulsory military service sustained critical injuries after shooting himself inside a base and was pronounced dead Tuesday evening in a hospital.

A military statement earlier said that a soldier was seriously injured in a shooting at a military base in northern Israel and was taken to the hospital, where he later died, noting that the military police had opened an investigation into the incident.

A total of 279 Israeli soldiers have attempted to commit suicide from the beginning of 2024 until July 2025, amounting to roughly one completed suicide for every seven attempts, according to a report by the Knesset Research and Information Center.

The Israeli army earlier confirmed that 48 soldiers had taken their own lives during military service since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023.

At least 13 soldiers also died of suicide outside military service due to psychological problems, including six since the beginning of this year; raising the total number of suicides since the start of the war to 61, Haaretz said.

Twenty Israeli soldiers died by suicide in 2024, and 16 others since the beginning of this year until July, Haaretz reported, noting that since then at least four additional soldiers have taken their own lives.

In October, Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir acknowledged a worsening mental health crisis within the army, saying thousands of soldiers were receiving psychological treatment. He urged commanders to stay alert, detect mental health problems within their units, and ensure that soldiers seek immediate treatment.

Nearly 10,000 Israeli soldiers out of 19,000 injured in Gaza are suffering from psychological disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder and are being treated at the Defense Ministry’s Rehabilitation Department, according to a previous report by the public broadcaster KAN published in late July.

Hamas killed them by placing its Iran fed munition dumps, and communication cebters under schools , hospitals and pub olic markets, using their own people as human shields.

Israel destroyed these cemters and munition dumps, and the civilians were collateral damage caused by Hamas.

Let History speak the truth. Israel will never allow any such inhumane policy of using human sheilds to deter them from assuring their own national securioty, whcuih is their national right.

I say BS to this line of gas lighting. The victim count is manufactured by Hamas. The suicides are a work of fiction to paint the IDF as the evil offender.

Most of the civilians killed were by Hamas. The bombs went up and came right back down. They were shooting civilians that were trying to make it to the safe zone. I saw a video of bodies laying all over the road.

You are right but it's also true that in war there is collateral damage. In war civilians are killed albeit unintentionally or sometimes it can't be avoided. Israel has killed civilians unintentionally as a result of war. It's called collateral damage. If one thinks otherwise, they are naïve.

War is hell. My step son was a paramedic. He had to retire early because of PTSD. Many of his colleagues committed suicide, with one he had to hold his cranium together while he slowly expired in his arms from a self inflicted rifle shot through the head.

My grandfather committed suicide in 1946 long after he returned home from serving as a horse drawn ambulance driver in WWI. He witnessed horrible carnage. He managed to handle his PTSD from the end of WWI in 1918 to Sept 1946, but it caught up with him.

War is horrible. It effects many human beings by forcing them to end the suffering by checking out .It has always been so throughout human existence. Israeli soldiers are no exception. The actg of self destruction is a boon, a solace.

There is only one solution.And that is putting on the full armor of G_d.Dealing with demons like HAMAS and theior demon god ALLAH infects good men with their own demons.It is no reason to expect that there is a conspiracy and flaw within the military. Its just the way suffering happens on this earth, and nothing will end such suffering because there can be no heaven on earth.But as human beings we have the tools t work with it. And if you are a man 0f military conscription age living in Israel officially, you must pay your dues according to law.

My gut feeling is that this suicide rate is not any higher or lower then any other year since Israel’s existence but whether I’m right or wrong statistics like in this article are useless without any other equal succeeding time frames before this time frame. Also suicide rates per different jobs in the military would also help. With out any other information this is nothing more then a propaganda piece.

I'm sure there are some Jews in the IDF and Israel generally who persecute Messianic Jews - ultra-Orthodox Jews particularly. Many Jews look back on the WW2 era as a time with "Christian" Europe did nothing or was complicit in allowing the gross suffering & persecution they experienced. I can understand why some Jews disdain Messianic Jews. Having said that, Israel Jews in the IDF are mostly not ultra-Orthodox but most are more secular than religious. I would question any 'widespread' persecution of Messianic Jews in the IDF. Do you have information that would say otherwise?
