Nick Reiner was diagnosed with schizophrenia, new meds made him ‘out of his head’ before parents’ murders: sources

Nick Reiner was schizophrenic, and his new medication was making him “out of his head” in the weeks before he allegedly killed his dad, Hollywood legend Rob Reiner, and his mom, Michele, according to a report.

The iconic director’s troubled middle child, 32, was being treated by a psychiatrist for his condition — but in the month before the murders, his behavior became “alarming” as doctors switched his medication, sources told TMZ.

About three to four weeks before Rob Reiner and his wife were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood mansion, his prescription was altered, making him “erratic and dangerous,” the sources said.

Doctors were trying to adjust his medication to balance him out — but the adjustment reportedly was not working and, combined with his substance abuse, actually made things worse.

Once his medication was changed, “Nick was out of his head,” a source told TMZ.

These drugs can cause serious problems—even psychosis.

Gee for someone who was supposedly “Schizophrenic” he was sure able to figure out how to drive to a hotel in Santa Monica,

There aren't any indications that he drove a car that night. There are videos/stills of him walking that night. The Santa Monica hotel he checked into is about 4 miles away from the home. That is certainly doable for a 30 something..

This was my thought. Nick was telling friends the new meds were making him feel worse. The doctor should have insisted on this—maybe they did and they didn’t listen.

You have no concept whatsoever of what you are talking about.

I had a relative on the schizo scale perfectly capable of doing all those things you describe while in a state thinking I was trying to kill him

To be fair, there was a germ of an idea that was based on fact that set him off. I clearly wasn’t trying to kill him with a water drink that had grapefruit flavoring in it but while he was worked up no one could reason with him. VA tried to get a hold put on him but Doctors wouldn’t do it.

You might want to look into the genetic testing for drugs. It’s real and is used to determine genetic processing for all drugs not just psych meds.

Not guilty by reason of insanity. He will be institutionalized the rest of his life. He won’t walk,

His siblings have said that they want Nick in a mental hospital not jail and it is Reiner’s estate paying the high priced lawyers fees.

If the drugs appeared to have an immediate negative reaction why wasn’t he taken off of them?

Did his lifetime of drug addiction have anything to do with his schizophrenia diagnosis? Was it genetic or self generated?

I wonder how he’s being medically treated in jail and what drugs are they giving him now.

I think the doctors tried to adjust them versus taking him completely off. Clearly, that didn’t work.

Perhaps the “ he is a manipulative liar” came into play.

Yes, they can be quite clever. Yes they manipulate. Yes they lie.

It is possible people just didn’t believe him.

I think Doctors are going to be in the hotseat on this. They better hope Nick doesn’t have a gene problem that has been proven to cause problems with the meds they were prescribing.

I get treated like a drug seeker even though it it is in my file that I have no functioning CYP2d6. If I even start asking the question of what can I take instead of OXY (like for a replacement knee surgery ) you can see a visceral reaction from a doctor so I now take medical evidence in with me in EVERY appointment that shows how my genetic problems cause problems with drugs in the form of a table from clinical pharmacology.

I have a medical rubber medical alert bracelet that has so many things on it that it is difficult to read but I alert them to the issue.

I can see the siblings agreeing to pay for their brothers defense. If convicted of murder he won't see a dime of inheritance because of the slayer rule. If sent to the funny farm by the reason of insanity, it is not a slam dunk that he would inherit anything.

Rob Reiner: Hey honey, here’s an idea - let’s take our drug-addicted and schizophrenic son, who is reacting badly to new meds, to Conan Obrien’s celebrity Christmas party. I’m sure everything will be fine!

How much worse than "Triumph The Insult Comic Dog" could Nick have been?
