Click on the title for a link to the new Supergirl movie trailer.

Watching the first 20 seconds I thought it was a spoof.

Apparently not.

They should have cast Sydney Sweeney

That would have given me two good reasons to watch it.

Drinker recently has been broadening his indictment, as have an increasing number of people, and appropriately so.

The fundamental problem is the viewers. The indie filmmakers still struggle to do good original work; they may not succeed, but they still try. And these are often pretty good movies and critically acclaimed, but they are scandalously underseen.

From time to time, the major studios still invest in films that aspire to be Art. These are typically far more expensivethan what any of the indies can attempt. And they flop at the box office. But “flop” is contextual. A studio mid- budget film that cost “40 million, with more for promotion, is a flop if it grosses $20 million at the box office. The same movie made for $10 million is a solid success. So can they get costs down and get back to solid mid-budget films? Not if the audience won’t show up.

If the audience settles for garbage, that’s what we will get. The streamers have almost destroyed the theatrical window and conditioned people to watch from home. And the at home audience consists of people who aren’t paying attention, can’t follow subtlety or a complex plot, and misses anything that demands more than a TikTok attention span.

We have met the enemy and they is us. If people won’t get out to watch a good, or at least interesting and challenging movie in the theaters, the garbage will become the norm.

That in turn will dry up the mass audience that allows serious filmmakers to scale up. The streamers will own all the major studios, and they will produce trash designed to be played as background noise. Serious filmmakers will serve a niche market — movies will always be more scalable than the live stage, but it be a world of law budget, ultra low budget, and microbudget mocies.

Everything we’ve seen in the movies displayed Kal-El’s departure from Krypton as it was exploding, just seconds ahead of destruction. To my knowledge, there were no other people on the planet that were working on sending a child out except his parents. And they equipped the vehicle with immense amounts of information to teach. And the child arrived as a child displaying strength and the wisdom of standing/walking. How did she get this information while arriving full grown or was that part overlooked in the script?

Pre-Crisis Superman (Golden through Bronze Age, and NOT taking in the movie versions) did NOT have AI Jor-El imparting information. It was just baby Kal-El, some baby blankets, and some glass in the ship was used to make Clark Kent's glasses so he can use heat vision through them.

The reason there was only one rocket ship was because Krypton was VERY large, with very strong gravity that made escaping the atmosphere challenging for any large scale projects (Krypto the Superdog had been in an earlier test rocket that found its way to earth.) More importantly, Jor-El was laughed off the Science Council (Krypton was a scientific aristocracy) as a crackpot.

Supergirl's story is different. When Krypton blew up, Argo City had blown off in one chunk (don't ask me why it kept its atmosphere). Zor-El, Jor-El's cousin, had been working on a ship, but didn't get as far a Jor-El. Anyway, the folks in Argo City had the technology to generate a protective dome (pictured in the trailer). So Kara (Supergirl) was conceived of and grew up in Argo City, and would have the life of a normal Kryptonian refugee. Eventually, Argo City turns to Kryptonite, but the resourceful Argonians managed to come up with enough rolls of lead to protect the inhabitants from Kryptonite radiation. Unfortunately, a meteor shower punctured the dome, and the lead shielding. Zor-El's rocket was ready to go, and off goes young Kara. Eventually it turns out that Zor-El and wife Alura managed to zap themselves into the "Survival Zone", which is like the Phantom Zone, but with no easy way out and an absence of bad guys. Superman cannot marry Supergirl because he is a first cousin, and marriage to first cousins is forbidden in Kryptonian religion.

There is some hilarious coverage of Supergirl by a poster called "Casually Comics" on YouTube, who does her homework.

"James Gunn has become his own joke."

He's not involved in this as far as I can tell. This movie isn't listed on his past or upcoming filmography. Director is Craig Gillespie.

"I kinda like it. At least it is an actual girl."

Actress Milly Alcock played the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in "House of the Dragon." She was a rather homely princess, and now a rather homely Supergirl.

I like Dave Cullen’s channel, too. Similar to ‘Drinker, but just him with an Irish accent.

He’s deeply involved. He is the head of DC Studios and selected both the source material and the team he wanted to handle it. He isn’t directing himself, but he is overseeing and his fingerprints are all over it.

Did they even realize that Blondie’s “Call Me” is a song about prostitution?

Besides that, it is also from another movie soundtrack ("American Gigolo"). Taking from a pre-existing, unexceptional movie is pretty lame, although Tarantino did it with "Putting Out Fire" (Cat People) in "Inglorious Basterds".

In modern Superman mythology, Kara was sent shortly after baby Karl-El to serve as his protector. For reasons, she didn’t arrive until after he was fully grown (and she was still a teenager). This makes her feel useless and inferior and she has to learn to be the hero she can be.

Okay, thanks. I didn't see his name among the director or writers, so assumed he wasn't involved. I didn't know he was the head of DC Studios. I think the only DC movies I've watched are Gal Gadot's "Wonder Woman" and Jason Mamoa's "Aquaman" movies. Gave up on Batman and Superman movies a long time ago.

I think Milly Alcock played the Feral Kid in “The Road Warrior’.

Thanks. I didn't watch that either. I watch very few movies these days.

Producer and he is the co-chair and CEO of DC Studios. This is all his vision, just like the MCU was/is Kevin Feige.
