PACIFIC PALISADES, CA — Bucking years of tradition, a family new to the California area has failed to build a single gingerbread house this Christmas season due to a backlog at the permit office.
"We're still waiting for the appropriate permits to build our gingerbread house," said Mona Riggs. "Baking gingerbread houses is a fun tradition we do every year, but at this point we'll be lucky to have one put together by the end of the decade."
According to sources, the January Pacific Palisades fire and its resulting destruction caused a significant logjam of processing permit applications. The city office has had to forward all applications to the county, where there was already a three-year backlog. The fire, however, was not the only cause for delay, but also the seemingly endless red tape.
"There are permits you need to get in order to get permits," Michael Riggs explained. "And in order to get the permits that allow you to get the permits, you have to provide detailed blueprints of your gingerbread house months beforehand. California regulations are crazy."
Under California law, a prospective ginger building must be accompanied by seven separate forms: Building Permit Request Form B, Building Permit Checklist, Preliminary Plan Check Application, Certificate of Occupancy, Peanut Allergy Impact Study Request, Land Acknowledgment Certificate for Gingerbread Persons of Color, and Express Baking Eligibility. And that's just for one house.
There's also currently a ban on gumdrops due to their impact on climate change, the Riggs family said.
At publishing time, the Riggs family was fined $10,000 for allegedly applying frosting to several gingerbread cookie pieces without state certification.

BB knows
Yes, his new law requiring that single family homes be forcibly replaced by apartments is working as planned. Dozens have already given up and sold the burned out lot to Newscum-approved real estate developers.
It is worse along the PCHighway, Malibu area. There, no houses are approved until someone comes up with a design that encapsulates the entire foundation in a stressed concrete structure that is proof against earthquake and fire — estimates start at an additional $1M. Basically, the CoastalCommission wants each house to be a concrete boat. Why? ‘Cause they don’t want house sewage to go into the sea if the house is destroyed.
Imagine. An earthquake capable of destroying everything in the area and the CComm is concerned about poop leakage.
Indeed.
Satire or not.
The Bee is really onto something from the spiritual perspective.
The PTB absolutely do not want any houses of ginger going up because they were told that the House of David comes out of there, Bethlehem being the house of bread.
They all WANT the gingerbread man to remain homeless! That way he might die from exposure, broken up into crumbs that the birds will gobble up. Gone!
It’s terrible, but not like that family isn’t already aware of plots to destroy them and their good works and their building plans.
Well, bureaucratic schemes are always half-baked (lazy, sloppy bakers), and this concern doesn’t even appear on their radar until the Christmas season anyway. Bureaucrats just don’t think things through.
All the ginger man had to do was build and finish his house “off-season”, when the permit creeps were fixated on say, proper housing and healthcare needs for Punxsutawney Phil, or regulating fireworks displays to death.
Worked like a charm.
This particular “California Family Still Waiting For Permit” is doing it wrong. No ingenuity, which is the tell that they are not members of the tribe, or at least not any in good standing.
Well, they can always go out for entertainment. DAVID is due to arrive in theaters before Christmas on the 19th, the day that 3I/Atlas is expected for the closest fly-by.
Special early release screenings today for Chanukah!
